cam timing question

92 sl. I have a question about the cam timing. In the manual, it says when reinstalling the timing belt, that the marks on both intake and exhaust should line up with the marks on the cam cover ( if I'm reading that right). I'm assuming that both gears have the same number of teeth, making them rotate 1/1. So, regardless of the crank position, both intake and exhaust marks should always line up with the cam cover, everytime.

If they don't line up anymore, mine don't, that means one of them has slipped. I ask beacuse mine don't line up intake to exhaust. But strangely, both the intakes are the same, and both the exhausts are the same, but all four never lone up at the same time.

I'll take pictures in a few.

Here's the pic. The cam timing marks have some white paint on them. Intake is at about 12 o'clock, the exhaust marks are at about 9.

Are these cans out of time? Both the front bank and the back bank look the same.

To tell if they are out of time you need to bring cylinder #1 to Top dead center. It takes (2) turns of the crank for the motor to make a full cycle through all cylinders.

When crank sprocket mark lines up with cylinder 1 at TDC all cam gear marks should line up on the covers marks. This goes for both the front and rear bank.

Are you asking because you just set the timing, or are about to remove the belt?

Besides what CntrlSwitch said, You're not mixing up the marks are you? There's two sets of marks, for "in car service" and "out of car service"
The marks on the cam cover line up with marks on the BACK of the cam gears.
The dots you have painted line up with arrows on the head.
Here's a picture, these are NOT in line but it shows the marks:

Both sets of marks, the front and the back, should line up at the same time.

Oh, and FYI, the metadata on you're picture shows your GPS position. Maybe you like company but if you don't want people showing up in your driveway you might consider shutting that off... ;)

I am mixing up the timing marks. I didn't know there were marks on the back.

I was aware of the metadata. If you wanna come over and help me fix the car, head on over. I'll put your ass to work. LOL.

I've got a weird problem. It's an intermittent miss at low rpm, worse when cold. If I keep the rpms above 3k or so, it seems to run with all cylinders. Below 2500, it has a very bad miss. At 65, I've got to drop down to third to get passing power. I was guessing that a cam may have slipped timing.

Maybe I have an injector driver going out. I have a cell, but can't get a reading. I don't have an analog volt meter. I do have mmcd and a palm, but for some reason the palm refuses to sync with any of the computers I have available, so i can't load the software.

I can count the teeth in the photo and tell your cars timing is OK. Unless the rear has slipped, but its very unlikely.

The timing marks on both front and rear valve covers is in the same place. Have you correctly identified the location of the marks on the front? Its very very hard to see them in the rear, but you can feel them with your finger.

Turn your crank until the two white dots line up with the notches. You wont need to turn it very far to line them up.

I might be in Austin Friday... I'm in Dallas right now. PM me

That's what I was doing, counting teeth, but it never hurts to get a second opinion.

I had the own oxygen sensor that I took out when I installed the innovate wideband. I put that back in. I'll reset the exult in the morning. I might have contaminated the wideband with excessive oil. But it has been having issues for 3-4 weeks now, and the problem I described just started on Monday. I started it up that morningand it was fine. I went to put in some has, and as soon as I started it back up it had a very bad miss that lasted for 40 staight minutes drive time., as i drove to bastrop. On the way back it was intermittent, and has been since.
