FYI- New for 2008 in CA- EVAP testing now a mandatory part of the biannual smog check

Just as the title reads- an EVAP test has been added to the Functional Test portion of the biannual smog check for all NON- OBDII vehicles registered in California (starting 2008). Our dealership has had our EVAP testing machine up and ready though we won't have to use it until the beginning of next year. It basically hooks up to the fuel filler neck and checks the vehicles EVAP system. OBDII vehicles have EVAP monitors to check for tampering so this type of test is not neccesary. If you've done a strategic vacc reduction that can pass smog visual- you now have to worry about the smog functional test. This is only in California so far- but since you all know that California serves as the leader and testing grounds of the Fed's movement for clean air- i'm sure other states will soon follow. NOTE: Don't shoot the messenger!

Pfffffftttttt, Blow me. California serves as the next version of Communism and Socialism all rolled into one.

Wow, I'm glad I got a chance to vote on that....

BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE SHOT IT DOWN!

The Peoples Socialist Republic of California is going to fail cars into the crusher....after a crapload of smog taxes. Another load of B.S. from the law making Communist entity C.A.R.B.

All in the name of the holy "Environment"

no emissions or visual checks PA (certain spots) FTW!

Can anyone say open headers= passing inspection? LOL

1975 and older for exempt status. Unless you live somewhere backwoodsy like I think Tuolumne county.

As big of a PITA smog laws are, I think it's funny how people rail on and on about how protecting our resources = communism. It's a sign of ignorance, considering how CARB seems mostly to work in favor of BUSINESS interests (honestly, who benefits from having the only product with a mandatory CARB sticker, who benefitted when CARB backed down on the previous more strict emissions regulations on Detroit?) Take a look at the air all over the state. It's horrible. If you want a car that dumps x-times more pollutants into the atmosphere, I think there should be a buy-out or tax option. Either that, or move to some shitty state that doesn't care about the type of world future generations will have to live with. I, for one, am glad California takes a proactive approach.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I think there are a lot of problems with emissions testing here. Like the visual inspection. Why should it matter what parts are there as long as the ACTUAL emissions are within spec? Do headers really pollute more than manifolds (assuming there is still a cat)? And what's wrong with a brand-x air filter compared to the K&N which can cost about 3x more? There's certainly room for improvement.

I think emissions tests are myths, you know, just like snow and ice storms are myths :)

If you know certain people then you will have no problems at all ;)

My car passed tests wonderfully :D :suspect:

What are you talking about? The functional EVAP test hasn't be added yet into the program  It starts next year.

wow, that sucks. isnt it true that if you do an engine swap with a different year or different model engine, they crush your car? my friends said that but i was skeptical. and the rules only apply to those living in cali, right? if i decide to visit and im running straight pipes or something can i get in trouble? louisiana has no enforcement when it comes to emissions, no inspection whatsoever.

and what about engines from different cars? like swapping a sr20 or rb25 into a 240sx?
