Big Difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen?

Hello,
I would like to know if there is a pretty big / noticeable difference between the 1st gen and 2nd gen VR4s.
Can you really tell that the 20+ horse power that the VR4 received is there?
Is it a basic tune-up or bigger turbos?

Thanks,
Jason

A lot people think the free boost mod doesn't do a thing. The second gens had different cam profiles in addition to running more boost. These two things combined to give it the 20 extra hp.

You probably wont be able to feel the 20hp difference unless your butt dyno is that finely tuned ;) If you really want to get more hp from a 1G go buy a MBC, a datalogger, and turn the boost up to ~14psi and call it a day.

You probably won't feel a difference from the horsepower, but the shorter gearing on the second gen will make it feel peppier...those two things combined could definitely make a noticeable difference, but you can spend less than $20 and a few hours time and pick up a lot more than 20 horsepower out of a first gen.

So that mean the 1st gen are better than the 2nd gen? if that's all separate the the two then according to the performance data the 1st gen(91) has the second fast 0 to 60 behind 97 model. So, in theory that mean the 91 vr4 would've had better times if it had the additional 20 hp like the 2nd gen. Wow that something for all ages.

the second gens were lighter faster and quicker and handled better. The handiling is basically a result of lower profile tires, 18" wheels and the better rubber that some of the 2nd gens came stock with over the first gens. The 2nd gens have a 1/4 mile time almost 0.5 seconds faster then a first gen due to the shorter gearing and slightly higher boost and less weight by like 50-60 lbs (plastic vacuum canister, no active exhaust, aluminum bumpers, lighter motor mount, lighter headlights (95 up) and a few things here and there I forgot. The 2nd gen has a better transfer case and all of the cars have a better overall transmission and engine over the 1991 version. The 2nd gens all have 4 bolts but most of the 93s have the 4 bolt as well. Oh, and 2nd gen brakes were better also.

in the end it does not really matter what car you get... only reason why its still a 3/s..and what ever you do one 1st gen..it can be done on a 2nd gen.

Ummmm 91-92 Cams are different from 93+ I belive.

But that isn't really the power difference its the 8.9PSI to 11.7 PSI difference that accounted for the 20 HP.

2nd gens have 4 bolt mains and forged cranks which are obviously better for high HP and longevity.

BUT 2nd gens have thinner upper ring lands.

Some 92's had the 25 spline shaft too :) same with a 4-bolt main

This is referring to the shaft that connects the tranmission to the tranfer case. The 18 spine shaft in earlier models is smaller and weaker.

Short answer: if you are asking then the difference is not significant enough to rule out either gen. Shop based on condition, mileage, and price.

The difference between the two generations is pretty much negligible performance wise. Looks are purely personal preference. My advice to you would be just spend a lot of time shopping around find one that has been really well taken care of even if it costs a bit more it will save you a lot in the long run.

exactly, so it wasn't the cams that made the difference in the HP :p

Just shop around and buy the newest lowest miles car you can find. Lets just say, if I had to find another car, it would be a low mile 95 VR-4 in mint condition. If I preferred the body style of a first gen, I would get a low mileage 1993 VR-4. I like the 99s, but I think the active aero wing is less juvenile and more of a time-less design and the car still has all the gadgets and color climate control.

evaps cans were put there for a reason. I leave mine. if the canr didnt need it for some reason, they wouldnt have put it on there.

The purpose of the evap system is to release pressure that gets built up in the gas tank, hold all the fumes, and then at the right time, put the fumes into the intake to be burned off. At least thats what i heard, and then i threw it out... ;)
