What does rebuilding a motor really mean?

Can someone explane what i need to do to rebuild my motor? I need more power out of my 96 SL and i was thinking about doing a "motor rebuild" and then boosting it. Thanks.

Well I dont know what you mean by boost it, but you have a NA so boost is out of the question unles you have a turbo motor or something and you just want people to think its a SL

But most people do a rebuild when their engine dies...such as a spun bearing etc etc..it just conists of taking out the old and putting in the new

I dont have much time, but Im sure someone else can do in-depth about it

I mean like i want to build my motor up so it can handle a decent amount of power like a twin turbo or a supercharger. My tranny has already been rebuilt to handle 450-500 hp.
what kind of specs do u have on that tranny? atx or 5-speed?

i got titanium spyder gears with a stage 3 competion clutch, new flywheel and more...all have about 1,200 miles on them. 5 spd

what is an 8:1 tt motor and where can i get one?
The stock 3/S TT engine has a compression ratio of 8:1. You can get one, as you might guess, out of a 3/S TT.

Considering the goals you posted above, it makes little sense to "build up" the motor, unless you want ooh-fancy internals just so that you can say you have them.

Excuse me, you got what?

Did you personally buy these items, or is this a claim by the previous owner? Where did you find them?

multiades, I got the car about 4 week after the tranny rebuild was done :)
Those parts do not reflect parts that you can actually buy.

Nobody makes "titanium spyder gears", nor would there be any purpose in manufacturing such a part.

A "stage 3 competion clutch" is more of a marketing name than an actual description of the part. Do you even know who makes the clutch? It could very well be a stock clutch.

8:1 is the copmpression on the non turbo'd 3/S's.

If I were you, I would just get a stock 6g72TT motor (Out of a Vr-4/Stealth TT).

In my opinion, you'll spend more money turboing your SL Motor rather than buying a different motor. Then you're still looking at fuel rails, injectors, lines, blah blah blah.

How many miles do you have on your SL, and what made you think about a rebuild?

the guy i bought the car from i knew him for a bit, hes a good guy, im 16 years old and he trusted me enough to give me the car and put me on a payment plan, i asked him why and he said he was my age a few years ago and he felt just like i did and loved 3/s but no one helped him out. Also the tranny rebuild cost $1800 with a 6 months warranty so I kno the tranny is good.

virtualarson, i just hit 124k miles, im just power hungry and need some help.

not to mention, im a good driver and can handle high horsepower cars so no worries. I also thought about this, they money i could spend turboing or swapping my motor, i could sell my car and put money on top of what i get for my car and just buy a Vr-4 that will have awd and aws but the problem is finding a buyer for my car. Ill be honost, its not the best 1996 3000gt SL there is. Heres my cardomain for those of you guys that would like to take a look, wing is not on there but i just ordered one and it is on its way.

"16" and "driving skill" don't mix too well here btw :)

Although, I drive a TT and I am still alive, and the car is running better then I bet it has ever...

Anyways, just enjoy the SL for a while. Practice double clutching, heel toe, brake apex accelerate, power shifting etc, then jump into the turbo. You would understand if you had a TT about cornering. The shit just eats up the road too fast, so it is too much to learn how. I use my mommy's corolla to practice corners and stuff, and frankley, it is alot of fun because I don't have to worry about boost hitting and throwing my ass out of allignment and into a tree. With the 'rolla, it just does its understeering and it is COMPLETLY controllable. Even with the AWD/AWS, it is crazy nuts for me to take corners fast, because the car is putting down so much power and torque so fast. My car is around BPU so it is probably producing a good 50AWHP more then a stock car.

You can look good in the SL too. I look like a jackass practicing my driving skills in the corolla. I look bad ass in the Stealth, but I wouldn't be looking to cool when the car decides to put itself in a big ass tree.

EDIT: I also forgot to say, you won't have ANY MONEY AT ALL if you own a TT unless you are loaded already.

Holy mis-information batman!

8:1 is turbo'd motors. 10:1 are NAs. No need to change fuel rails when TT'n an NA as they are the same (pretty sure). Its a decent amount cheaper to TT a N/A then to get a TT motor. Trust me, ive done it.

You were fed a bunch of bullshit. Congradulations on not doing your homework and not knowing what the fuck you are talking about. No one that actually can handle high HP cars claims they can, they just prove it. I highly doubt you can.

Fuck...this platform is turning into the 240 platform extremely quickly. Given, im in no way the oldest on here but i spent countless hours of reading on here before i bought my car.

yea dude i highly doubt you can handle high horsepower cars, I more cars for my buddies dad, he does all the pace cars for the indy 500, brickyard, and the F1 race, and i drive them all around indianapolis. so between the vettes and all the amg's on the highway and shit I would still say that I am not a great driver with high horsepower cars.

You're missing one thing: you have no factual information about the transmission itself. Anybody who tells you "titanium spider gears" is full of shit.

I'm with the other guys that say you are not ready for a twin turbo. Here is a nice list why:
1. Your 16 and don't know how to drive. Sure you think you are good but you can't possibly have the time under your belt to be able to make that claim.
2. Your on a budget. Going turbo will cost you double what your most rediculous price estimate would be.
3. It sounds like your automotive knowlege is quite limited. Lucky for you, this site, stealth316, and the like can fix that. You just need to put in a lot of reading.

Honestly do yourself a favor and listen to this advice.

Hey man im 19 got my VR4 with 20k miles on it at 17... it was not the best financial decision i could have made. i do not have ANY cash and i wont be done paying for things i broke for a lil while.. these cars are really not a car for someone who is tring to get on thier feet in life. UNLESS your parent/gurdians have lots of cash to fix it soon as i breaks or peel you off the high way after a deadly crash man... if you want more power just go with N/A power dont go turbos, not yet. it all cost too much

get another car to drive daily if you plan on modding it alot... im in the process of "rebuilding" my "motor". i have spent about 40 hours to get it ready to PUT BACK IN. im not done yet though. the down time on my car has been too much for me to ever buy one again. i now have a daily driver and this is my project car but also my life. these cars are sweet BUT are not for some one who is 16 and you prolly dont a got a job that pays 15+ an hour to pay for broken parts, gas and every thing else. do some research on this thread, type in you car on google just learn more about it and take you time driving. you dont seem like the type to "handle" HP

i was not either at 17 when i put my car into a very forgiving ditch at 120 backwards around a corner. i learned REAL FAST though... god let me live and since then i thank him ever day for me still being alive, not to mention the other close calls the HP has got me... i am always learning and with as many cops out nowadays sports cars are going to be for "show" anyways just make it look nice and get yourself some HOTTIES, they dont care about speed.

just take it easy killer... :bandit:
