Hi all,

one quick question... is the ticking noise when the engine cold normal? I'm really concern about this, but I've seen msg on this board saying that's one of our cars' weaknesses. I would like to get some oppinions before I go to the dealership.

Thank a bunch!

Its just the valve lash adjusters. It won't hurt anything. Its just annoying. They aren't getting enough oil up there when the engine is cold. There's a post for replacing the oil fill cap gasket and the PCV valve. That seems to have helped a few folks...

Had the same problem in the GSX engines. It's just the lifters, like WashU said. When I let mine run a bit it stops.

I also had Solenoid tick but I readjusted my Apexi AVC-R and that seems to have stopped. *shrug*

I believe it was the solenoid ?

From what I've heard, Brian said so too I believe, the AVC-R is a very ticky thing :p

I'm not sure what happened -- I know my settings were set back to default when my battery died.

I'm not sure what I did, though, other than set it back up. I went back through and put the solenoid duty back on learn mode, etc. I noticed that it's actually "learning" quite well now. It was barely doing anything before.

Maybe I'm just on crack :)

Thanks for all the replies guys.... I really appreciate all the help. This ticking noise became worst after I replaced the lifter. Yes I had them all replaced two weeks ago. Any idea about what I can do to stop it?

Run a search on noisy lifter fix. There's info on changing the PCV valve and oil fill cap gasket to make sure that all of the oil fumes stay in the engine and equalize properly. It seems that for many people the oil fill cap leaks from a bad seal. When this is fixed the noisy lifters seem to quiet down for many people...

I used to have a ticking noise that was NOT the lifters. From the driver's seat it sounded like it was coming from the firewall near the battery. The ticking was sporadic. It turned out to be the stock boost control solenoid. It is the solenoid on the firewall behind the throttle body closest to the driver on my '92. I unplugged the electrical connecor and have not had a problem since. I use the HKS EVC IV instead.
