I just had to take my starter off to clean and grease. It is possible to take off without removing the downpipe but it is almost like a puzzle. First I unscrewed the two 10mm bolts on the heat sheild, then unpluged the starter, then the 2 14mm bolts holding the starter inplace. wiggle the starter around until the heat sheild is free then slide the starter out. OOHH dont forget to disconnect the battery first!!
As normal here's a link to jeff's site I found very helpful
This may be a little different since I have a VR-4.
