I hear great things about these in dash speakers but then I read that they are smaller (at 2.5") than the max size for that opening which is about 3 1/8" I think. So has anyone gone with larger in dash speakers and had any luck. I just feel like i'm not utilizing the space if I can have a bigger speaker there.

As we discussed in our emails, the JBL's are an inexpensive option when replacing the dash speakers. Short of going to a component system for the front of the car, they're the best bang for the buck. I promise you, you'll love 'em.

To my knowledge, no one has come up with a perfect-fit replacement speaker for the dash. Generally, all the major names (Infinity, Pioneer, Kenwood, et al) offer a 3 1/2" speaker, but they're simply too large to fit in the opening. DJKontakt was working on modifying the Infinity 3 1/2" speakers, but I don't think he ever posted his results.

As you can see in the attached photos, I manufactured a simple trim ring out of wood (painted black) that made for a nice fit. Other owners have found a way to fit the JBL's in a little deeper and have placed the stock grilles over them. I may go back and do that this spring. I'm sure placement has an effect on sound quality, so I'm hesitant to make any changes. They just sound so damn good to my ears. They've raised the sound stage slightly above the dash and add a clarity to the music that just wasn't there with the stock speakers.

Once again I appreciate your response. Thank you for taking the time out to email me and answer all of my questions. I ordered these speakers from discountjungle and they should be coming any day. The directions posted on the forums and Jeff Lucius's website seem fairly straightforward so hopefully I'll let you know how they sound soon!

from www.discountjungle.com the total was 72.75. That's including shipping.
Yeah these are a great deal for the price (be warned, discountjungle has great prices, but they rape you on s/h). My '96 3kgt speaker assembly had a plastic grill that I had to dremel out, but then the speakers fit in place... heads up for those anticipating a similar install on these cars as outlined in the audio faq.. Two big thumbs up :)
