Hey guys, looking at purchasing a set of saleen replicas in 18x9. they're available in 36 offset. if I go with a 36, will they stick out of the fenders at all?

Tires going on are 245/40/18. Thanks

I believe that 35mm is ideal with a 9 inch rim so I doubt 35 mm would stick out past the fender that bad. My 8.5 inch rims have a 44mm offset and they sit flush. Maybe someone else could confirm that 35mm is OK but I think it would be.

Yeah, I'm thinking it would be ok, but I want the wheels to be as close to flush with the fender without really sticking out too much. I like agressive offsets, just not sticking out like an inch lol.

No, they won't. They'll be closer in the front ... the rear rims need more offset to be flush. If you run 5mm spacers in the back they'll be even in terms of fender flushness. I don't think you'll be hellaflush though LOL

As a point of reference, my 18x9.5 +20mm rims barely stick out in the back but stick out a good 1/2" or more up front.

Thanks Ryan. Once I get the wheels I'll have to check into some spacers..

I am researching and looking for wheels as well. Here are what I have gathered. Wheels with the offset and width only will not do anything in the term of having the caliper cleared. Offset + Spokes Design + Width + Back Space of the wheels all play an important role.

Offset = How you safely hook it on the hub without it hanging out too much
Spokes Design = How you can have your Caliper Cleared off
Width = Related to offset and related to Having your Caliper Clearance
Back Space = Related to Offset and Caliper Clearance.

Offset + Spoke design = will have your Caliper cleared off, but what about the width of the wheels ? If you do this 17x8 which is 0.5 inches different from the stock and you want to do 46 mm offset, you are losing 12.7 mm. Now take 46mm-12.7mm= 33.3mm This is the Actual Offset you gonna have. This is too far off from the Stock Offset not to mention that you are losing 12.7mm in Tires Contact
Offset is measured from the center of the wheel. It doesn't matter if you have an 8,9, or 10 inch wheel. If the offset is 46mm, it's 46mm. Rim width does not change offset. If the rim you have is .5 inches less than stock, that's a .25 inch difference on each side. Therefore, you will want to shoot for an offset that is 6mm LESS than 46. In other words, you will want an offset of about +40.

Now If you take into account the Width and the Back Space. (Refer to this site to figure out your offset https://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html) Back Space is another Additional to the offset. So let say if you are looking at a wheel with 8.5 width = same as stock clearance with 6" Back Space, your additional clearance = 32mm offset. Therefore 46-32=14 Offset. Therefore anything with this Width 8.5" and 6" Back Space with 14 or more in the offset will have you cleared off the Caliper. The Back Space is very Important, the bigger the Back Space the more you are assured that your Spokes will Clear the Big Caliper.
Backspace is really just the width of the rim divided by 2 plus the offset. What you said above actually confused the hell out of me:p

I am writing this as much as I know and understand about how to clear our car caliper. The problem is alway the caliper clearance. I understand this much = all thanks to Vince06 and X2Xtreme360.
Second gen VR4 and TT calipers are the largest pain in the ass. First gen VR4/TT calipers and NA calipers are so much simple when it comes to fitting rims.

Yeah, I'm figuring the +36mm offset will be flush with the fender. my main concern is that it does NOT stick out from the fender a ridiculous amount, I'd prefer no MORE than a quarter of an inch.

Also The Saleen replicas I'm considering now are 18x9, +36mm Offset.

#13 ·
That's just right. The smaller the offset and the wider the rim, the more the rim sticks out from the fender. You definitely can have whatever offset you want but it may night be flush with the fenders.

#14 ·
Lucky I don't have to worry about caliper clearance :)

I guess I'm learning from all this that the 18x9 +36's won't stick much at all?

#15 ·
Yea they will a small bit I would think. My 8.5 inch rims have a 44mm offset and they sit pretty damn flush. You might be maybe half an inch out but it will look just fine.

According to 1010 tires calculator, a 18x9 w/ 36mm offset will stick out 14mm more than an 18x8.5 w/44mm offset :) so 1.4 CM isnt bad at all.

people don't have rubbing issues with wheels sticking out like that do they?

#22 ·
Very Nice :) I think I'm gonna order these soon!

#24 ·
I guess the only question left is what kind of lug nuts do I need for these wheels? Conical seat? or shank style?

#26 ·
45? Everything I've seen for lugs is a 60deg. taper. I've NEVER seen 45. I know valves and valve seats are usually 45deg, but....

I also want to make SURE I will not have rubbing issues with these wheels/tires!!
to recap I've got:
18x9, +36mm offset, 160mm backspacing
245/40/18 tires.
car is lowered on eibach springs.

I want to make SURE because these tires are brand new and dont want to fuck shit up...

Wheels are ordered in 36MM :D

Clint: are those wheels 8 or 9" wide? are you running spacers?

Do you have a pic of the front of the car?
Thanks.

#33 ·
Thanks for the pics! I'm psyched now these wheels will look awesome :)

Wheels are here! went to get them mounted but town fair tire won't touch them because they don't want to damage brand spanking new wheels.. which is for the better anyway.

Going tomorrow to a much more reputable shop, will have pics after I get back and wash the car lol.

here's a sneak peek:
