I own a 1995 vr4 with 21m miles on it. I noticed that it has a loud knock when I first start it up. After it warms up and is ran alittle the knock softens but is still there. Any ideas on what I can check, or what I need to fix?

Define Knock....

Is it like a CLAAAANKKKK CLAAAAANNKKK........

or a klack klack....

First thing to come to mind when reading your post is lifters. Mitsubishi is most notable for having shitty oil designs in all of their cars. They drain down over night, then you have a little cam slap till they refil. When it warms up the oil thins out, and fills them easier + by the time their warm they're usually full again.

Also, how does it run? If it were a spun bearing (also really known on our 3s's) it would first start out being rpm dependant, meaning usually you wouldn't hear it below 3k rpms. AND spun bearings with rod knock USUALLY ALWAYS activate the knock sensor, flooding the engine and retarding the shit out of the timing. So as you drive when you step into it, the car will take off then slow with stuttering and popping in the exhaust.

I'm guessing lifters. You'll know if the noise is comming from the valve covers (upper) vs the rods and crank (lower) parts of your engine. To fix this replace them with new lifters, preferably gen 3's as their oiling is better.
