wow 4.04 0-60 thats crazy :) that stage 2 clutch much be nice, :qgiggity:
Once you get into the 11's, that means (according to those graphs) that your 0-60 time is now in the 3's. Then you can play the "if you can grab that $100 bill on the dash when the light turns green, you can have it" game with your passengers. :bigthumb:

Hahahaha! Best thing I've read in a long time, good stuff.

The drag strip is incredibly sticky for a couple of reasons. The rubber and the VHT they spray on the track. It's like the worst movie theater you've ever been to with dried soda on the ground. You'll walk out of your shoes.

actually the 4.04 was with a stock clutch sliped just right the stage 2 grab a little too well boom went the transfer case.
And i averaged 4.4

the only time I tried a high rpm dump with my stock clutch, I got some slipping and that smell. You know the one.
Not going to do it anymore. I dont have anyone to impress.

supposily metal flying everywhere i didnt see anything Here some pics i took of the carnage.

Anyway gives me an excuse to buy a transfer case brace and a new transfer case from 3sx anyway.

Supposedly the Pontiac GTO can do 0-60 in 4.7 seconds, and the fastest stock time I've seen for the VR-4 (also in this thread in the mag article) is 4.8 seconds. As usual, a race between those two cars would really depend on the driver, manual transmissions, tires, etc. I'm glad your friend beat the shit out of that OHV outdated Pontiak engine. OHV engines should be in trucks, not in sports cars; their engine life is nowhere near an OHC's.

However, the good (and bad) thing about AWD twin turbos is that their performance is variable depending on who is driving the car (and the stoutness of the parts involved). In the past, I had an old worn clutch that smelled after dropping it past 3000 RPM, no way I was gonna dump it just to win a race. That cost me losses to a WRX and even two different Mercedes C320's, believe it or not. Now, this was in a 35 mph zone, so I'm not gonna floor it to 70 mph and catch up just to win. It's simply because I started at normal RPM and then floored it after about 2000 RPM instead of dropping an old and worn clutch.

On the positive side, after some minor mods (intake, exhaust, pulley, intercoolers, boost controller, theoretical 410 HP, realistic with miles and compression loss more like 360-390 hp) I've beaten a Dodge SRT-10 Truck with the Viper engine; supposedly that does 0-60 in 4.8. I've also beaten (up to 65 mph when I let off the gas) a Dodge Charger with the 390 hp V-8 and 0-60 in 4.9. That fat fuck floored it to 85 mph in a 50 mph zone and then stuck his hand out the window doing the "got you by the balls" sign. Dude, don't be an idiot in a school area, you lost the race up to 65 mph, don't continue to 100 mph in a 50 mph zone entering University space. Spoiled brat, daddy bought that car for him I'm sure.

Another funny one was when I toasted a BMW 330i (that can only do 0-60 in 6.4), again a college student; she didn't understand how her then new Bimmer couldn't beat a Jap car. She kept trying to match my speed, going over 70 mph in a 45 zone, again c'mon don't be a dumb bitch, you lost the race, you aren't perfect, accept it and forget about it.

So...stock VR-4 should be somewhere between 4.8-5.4 seconds, depending on 300-320 hp and of course the driver. Stage I mods like on my car may dip the 0-60 down to around 4.5 seconds, but I doubt I could beat the V-8 M3 that does it in 4.1-4.3 seconds. Should be able to take the previous-gen M3 straight-6 that does it in 4.7 seconds. Kept up with an "M" roadster from 40-100 mph before any mods...

After a shitty ceramic-composite clutch that only lasted 3 years (and could NOT dump in 1st gear), and a new tranny, I bought a heavy-duty ACT MB2-HDSS clutch. Unfortunately, I still have not really raced a worthy competitor since I got it two years ago... This is not the easiest clutch to pedal down on in stop-and-go driving, so be warned. You will wish you had an automatic tranny after about 15 minutes in city traffic with this clutch. It's the real deal when it comes to durability though and that's what you need in an older car.

On a side note, I recently looked at some other used sports cars that would be worth buying. Nothing besides the Porsche Turbo would be worth trading a VR-4 for, and that's an $80,000 car used! Any other car worth buying would be new: M3, RS5, possibly a Lotus; I don't like the GT-R, too refined and no manual option.

I test drove a 335i a few years ago and it really made me appreciate the old and rickety VR-4 I have. The 335i manual shifts really weird, it's not a smooth tip-in, and it's totally gutless after 5000 rpm. I couldn't believe it, it sounded like an old Honda Civic past 5000 rpm. Our cars are still the shit after all these years!

good story. our cars never got the respect they deserve
Well, you gotta remember that at the time, the cars that were competition to ours, have been in the game for many years. Nissan Skyline GTR, Mazda RX7, Toyota Supra and the Nissan 300ZX. Whether it be racing roots or just being out on the streets, they've been here a lot longer than the 3000GT. I think another underrated car (at least here in the States) is the NSX. The difference with the 3000GT and NSX, is that the NSX is a pure bred race car (JGTC/Super GT)

I still think that if our transmissions, transfer case and diffs weren't so shitty, the 3s would have gained much more respect!

No need to remake it. They are great cars just the way they are...just gotta unload the useless crap from the factory to shed some weight(3400lbs appx), get some real tdo4's on em(lovin the 19T's), flashed ecu setup(in the works)...and these cars are as good as new again.

I'm in the process of doing just that...its a work in progress and I'm lovin every mile of it..:D

Thanks for the paragraphs! I went back and read it and yeah you're right the magazines have no idea how to launch. With one exception: Motor Trend in 1997.

That being said, the situation you described is so awesome and perfect. I like to think it happens to everyone who owns a VR-4 or TT at some point, whether from a stop light or on a track or on the highway or wherever. Makes me grin reading about it!

But you know that if your friend was to mod the car at all, even just a little, it would really start picking up speed quick. :)
When I bought my '93 VR4 (stock - 1996) I test drove it on a rainy afternoon. To this day I remember my amazement of having that many horses and being able to use them all in the wet. Same goes for extreme launches ............. especially with a few more horses (410AWHP currently in my '97). Don't need the astronomical HP numbers others have on this board. Just want to be able to get to and from the grocery store quickly with that loaf of bread :)
