Fixing up a VR-4 that's been sitting.

My VR-4 has been sitting for a few years now, & I'd like to get it ready to drive.
It has about 110k miles on it. I'll have to get new brakes/rotors tires, probably rubber hoses etc. I'm thinking about going ahead with the 120k tune up.

What would you with experience recommend doing with a car that's been sitting a while?

All fluid and oil changes, plugs and wires would be a good idea, drain the gas and put fresh gas in it, and I believe cars that have sat for a FEW YEARS need some kind of primer injected in them, not sure how though.

Thanks for bringing that up. Right before I had to park the car I changed the plugs, wires, & coils. They have less than 50 miles on them, does it kill plugs/wires to sit or do you think the ones I have are worth keeping?

I left very little fuel in it & ran the rest out letting it idle long ago, but I'll search on the primer injection, or if anyone else has more info link or post it here.

Sounds like you had some bases covered then. I don't have enough experience storing cars to know if new plugs would be good still, I don't see why not, but cars are weird - and more specifically - OUR cars are even MORE weird.

I would change the fluids for sure though man, especially engine oil at the bare minimum.

The wires etc won't degrade from sitting, but if not sealed well could get dirty while stored and need some cleaning. If in a humid environment rust could be an issue. Get new fuel if you've let it sit for longer than 6 months and if you didn't use stabil when first storing it. The battery will likely need to be charged or replaced.

Starting it up, you don't need to change the fluids oil/water/brake fluid etc. but it should be done before using it daily again.

I've stored my Charger R/T SE now for 29 years, its got 2 year old oil in it, although i've started it with 15 year old oil in it before. My stealth has been parked now for over 3 years, i start it up and run it every six months or so, and add fresh fuel around the same time, no longer than 8 months or you gotta worry about the fuel going bad and causing problems. I use stabil on the cars i don't anticipate getting started anytime soon.

Should be ok, I've reused gas in the car that was up to 6 years old before, but the car was just getting fired up not driven around. And i didn't use stabil, but after dropping the tank on the charger twice now, and due to do it again soon, its a smart thing to stabilize the gas when you first park it. When the car is parked, I usually keep around 5 to 6 gallons of gas in it since it isn't hard to run it out as it ages.

I keep 12 gallons of fairly fresh premium in the garage for emergency use so can always refill if necessary, I haven't had any problems going thru it so far.

How did it work out?

I didn't get a chance to switch out the old fluids because I couldn't find a local performance auto shop that sold Redline and other good stuff until today, but I did get a chance to start the car up and drive it around the block once to see how it drove. I replaced the battery and put new wheels and tires on. I'm going to have to get new brake pads soon and brake lines but there's no rush. Other than that everything seems to be fine although the lifter tick is out of control. I will be switching out the old stuff soon and installing a canton oil filter before I start driving the car daily again. Probably within the next two weeks. I'm excited to get this car back on the road :)

How's it going Bob!
I'm tolerable these days, trying to get my ass back on the road, dealing with the same life issues everyone else is. How about a loan buddy :D
My blue striped bitch is just pearl white these days but thanks for the memories. I'm amazed someone remembers me by name, that's like a friendly pat on the back.
All considered life can only get better from here if it doesn't continue on the same path. I'm looking forward to getting the VR-4 on the road, or even driveable. I'm going to try to keep it afordable once it's on the road, then i'm going to grab the girlfriend & come visit you so we can go for a ride in that spyder (top down). How's that sound? I hope life has been treating you well, we'll have to catch up sometime buddy.
It's good to get a post from you. I should be around the forums a little more now.

Hey Sabotage, get your car running yet?

I got a chance to change the fluids yesterday. Redline 10w40 motor oil, BG Syncroshift II in the transaxle, Shockprook Heavy in the TC, and Redline 75w90 in the rear diff. I also installed a canton oil fiilter. The lifter tick is much much better and my oil pressure is much higher :) I have a few more things I have to replace but there isn't a rush. At high speeds (70+) the car doesn't handle as nice as I remember. The steering wheel vibrates a little and wobbles. I think the new wheels may be to blame. I'll have to switch back the old ones to check. But other than that shes solid! Hope you have as good luck as me ;)

I doubt that he has as I have his ECU (he sent it to me to check it out).

Hoping to do THAT this weekend!!

Bob.
