So I did the EGR block on my 97 SOHC.. not so much for performance cuz I know it doesnt work at WOT etc. more for cleanliness.. Cleaner cold air is better than the alternative. My plenum was caked with carbon. Anways... I got a CEL today while sitting in traffic. I know its from the EGR but I cant figure out how to get rid of it. Ive searched but nothing... Remember its a SOHC 97.. anyone have ideas?? I know a resistor works, but I dont where to place it... THanks guys...

Actually, I hear there is a way around it. It has something to do with rerouting a vacuum hose so that the ECU detects air flow when the EGR should be open. I saw it in a thread in the turbo forum. I am trying to do this as well, so does anybody know how to do it?

Is this it Carson?

Problem though. I just installed a DOHc TB, and it is a fed-spec one, so I only have one vacuum hose tee coming off of it. What should I do now? I didn't really understand what to do from that diagram anyways lol.......

I have done a similar thing.... I installed OBX Headers from ebay which needed some minor adjustments but most of all did not have a return line for the egr... Therfore, I made two block off plates out of 1/4" Al... Now I'm getting the CEL complaining about the EGR.. If anyone has a solution feel free to e-mail me or post it. I found sevral people talking about solutions with a resitor and vacume lines however no one posted step by ste instructions.... Please Help...

Thread is back from the dead.. Oddly enough, about a year since I first started it. SOHC Egr is acutally more of a pipe than the DOHC. It screws into the rear header as opposed to two bolts like the DOHC, kind of odd. You can block it, but to fill the hole you have to find one big ass screw. I actually ended up putting it back as its not really super performance mod. Most people do it to get the pipe outta the way and make spark plug changing easier. It also stops circulating hot, carbonized exhaust into the plenum. Arguably can affect mpg, etc. There is a way to put a resistor in it, but that is only for non obdII cars.

Actually I just read through your old post. That makes complete sense. I need to look under the hood real quick and see exactly what hose into the plenum youre talking about, but air is air and the EGR is none the wiser. Great Idea, ill have to get creative this weekend. lol. Seafoam everything out, and keep it clean by doing EGR delete all over again.

OBDII required a lot more diagnostics from the OEM than OBDI, in addition to standardizing the codes and requirements. That's why the resistor won't work. OBDII actually checks for a pressure change when the EGR is open and it looks at pressures at specific points in the drive cycle. I don't know if that's from the MAP or if there's a pressure sensor somewhere else in the system just for the EGR.

I blocked the EGR on my '96 two years ago but left the solenoids in place. In time, it throws a CEL. I keep meaning to look at the service manual to try to figure out how to fool it, but I haven't gotten to it yet.
