Friend of mine is rebuilding his heads to install on a new OEM shortblock. His heads have 150k on them. When he took them apart he noticed that his valves are black (exhaust) and white (intake). Now he is telling me that he needs new valves, and I am telling him he doesn't he just needs to clean them up.

So what's the concensus? Do valves go bad, in his case, are they bad and in need of replacing?

I am sure the valve seating surface can wear along with the valve seats in the heads. Take them to a shop and have a good valve job done and he'll be safe.

Yes.Valves and their seats wear after time.Depending on heat, mileage, fuel quality, general tune of the car,RPM's and spring tension. This is why it's common to have the valves cut when you do a head job.

lol awesome....so i took apart one set of heads and all the E and I valves are out....should i put them back in and have the machine shop look at them and see what needs to be done? the shaft of them look fine....its the underbody of each valve that looks like crap....do i also need new valve guides?

The deal is if you have the valves out of the heads at the very least they need to be marked and go back into the same place as the seats/valves wear in together. This is why it's just easier to break them down and have a valve job done.
