Im installing a new timing belt on my 92 vr4 and wanted to confirm that I was putting the crankshaft at top dead center. Attached is a picture of the crankshaft sprocket with the block mark on it. The second picture is of a pointed flange off the block that is slightly to the right of the sprocket. I believe that the block needs to align with the flange to be tdc. If im wrong please correct me.

There's a notch mark in the sprocket you have to line up with that pointer... The keyway(your first pic) will be at aprox. 8 o'clock position.
Attached to the back of the crank sprocket is a hall effect rotor which has a cutout in it to line up #1 TDC.

cpa , the sprocket will just slide off the crank snout. It might get a little tight towards the end of the crank so spray some lube to help it . Carefully clean the crank snout before you replace the sprocket, and lightly lube the new one prior to installing. Take your time and good luck. Steve
SO why dont you put a phillips screwdriver down the #1 spark plug hole and use it to guage where the piston is? DO this carefully so you dont hurt the screwdriver!
