Burnout!

When my car was being worked on after the tranny fiasco, the mechanic told me that under hard acceleration from a dead stop, they heard a loud noise under the car. After weeks of investigating and researching, they informed me that the stock 91 VR-4 is incapable of breaking traction. Reason being, that every other spline on the driveshaft in the rear differential is shaved slightly due to there being so much torque that it will twist the frame/axle. So...how true is this? Can anyone/everyone break traction except me?

Yeah, I can break traction, but I don't really want to. I got AWD for a reason. Some mechanics don't even know what they're looking at when you take a 3S in to them.

Apparently to nobody. Burkemont Service Center in Morganton, NC. They were the ones who ripped me off. The $5K people...yeah. They said and I quote that "when you really rev it up and drop the clutch, there is a loud 'pop' under the hood and after calling (insert name here) in california, they are 3000 gurus, but they said that..." what I wrote down basically. So that is what I was told. I can't find a mechanic I trust around here. I'd like to go to 3sx but its pricey since I'm recovering from that bill

I don't have proof of anything. I've never tried to do a burnout in it so I don't know. Does anybody know a good mechanic in the Hickory, NC area?

Haha I graduated college in May, I don't have that kind of credit limit

Lawdogg, what stock car are you using to break the tires loose in gears other than first? Even with so-so tires it is difficult in most stock cars to break the tires loose with a stock clutch. Even with an aftermarket clutch a 1g xcase will usually go bonkers before breaking the tires loose cleanly.

OP, a shop admitted to dumping the clutch on your car? That right there is reason enough to get your money back and take your business elsewhere. If you're on a stock clutch consider it 20k miles less useful because a dump from 6500+ RPM is just gonna burn it up.
Also, your not going to be twisting your frame/axle with anything less than 700 awhp haha.

The OP mentioned the rear diff, not a stock clutch or stock anything else. :p With a good clutch and BPU mods, you can break them loose on the 1-2 powershift. ;)

Hell, with a good stock clutch I bet you can still do it. Not ALL stock clutches are garbage!

Its definitely tough to find a good 3S mechanic in NC unless you're near 3SX. I found one in greensboro because my dad lives near there. I lived there for about 1/2 of a year and found a place that could do any work I needed for pretty cheap, and did a great job. Don't take your car back to a place that's already screwed you.

I did it all the time in my SL. Didn't matter what tires I had. Same with a 4 banger Mustang

Both of those are 2 wheel drive. TT's are AWD.

#21 ·
Wait, wait, wait... Do these mechanics know its AWD? I wonder if they tried to get it to break traction and since they couldn't they tried to come up with a lame excuse.

#22 ·
BTW, how much was that mechanic per hour, if you know, in Greensboro? That is about 2 hours from my house but 3sx is about the same in time

#24 ·
Its was around 50, but it could be more by now, I'm not sure. Its not really worth a 2 hour drive though. Just ask around and get recommendations. if the mechanic knows that you were referred by one of their good customers, they may be less likely to rip you off.

Hell if I know. Its Morganton remember? Yeah exactly 'don't know where that is' Im trying to find a new mechanic..one that has actually seen a 3K

#25 ·
I looked around and I don't feel confident that anyone has ever worked on a 3K before. Some are pretty high. I have a mechanic I used to go to who charged $40 an hour but he never worked on a 3K before mine

#28 ·
If you want to hear a horror story, ask me about what happened when I had to get the car towed after wheels locked up on I-40 to a dealership that ripped me off! Muahahaha

#34 ·
Yeah my shop is up to $88/hr right now. Good thing I don't ever have to take my car there.

Sounds like you need to get your car out of there and get your money back.

#30 ·
a) its not an issue of charging $50 an hour its an issue of mechanics never working on a 3K before and b) you should consider moving

#31 ·
See IMO, you should have went back to that mechanic with your friends and a few baseball bats and broke their legs. If ANY mechanic told me, " Theres a strange sound coming from your car when we dump the clutch at high RPM's", I cant tell you what would happen..but it would be very bad for them:mad:

I WISH!!! We need to have an international posse of 3K owners. There are many questions I have for them but I had questioned them before and they responded like shady people would "ooh well we talked to this so and so shop in California and they are the GURUS of 3000s" I responded well I talked to alot of 3K owners on 3si and there is a shop in Concord called 3sx (free advertising so 3sx feel free to help me out!) who ALL know this car front and back. Essentially I pulled my pants down and bent over my hood and they had their way. I walked out of there with a $5K bill

VR-4s can't do burnouts? See avatar.
