Does anyone know if there is a use for this transmission in this country? The JDM non turbo 4wd had this tranny, and I know someone selling one in MD, wanted to try to help him out....

Since the FWD AT 3/S uses the same tranny as the FWD turbo DSM (F4A33-1). I would guess that the AWD NA would use the AWD turbo DSM tranny (W4A33-1).

Hope that helps

imetis, i find it particularly ironic that you have a frotn strut bar and don't have any other suspension mods...

Can we go offroading sometime? hehe

i'm pretty sure i was refering to LOWERING the car since i asked if he wanted to go offroading.. i meant to put strut bars, but for some reason i just put front strut bar... i fogot you were still on the boards or i'd have changed it to please you...

Have you seen the pot-holes in Michigan? I go off-roading every day!
Seriously though, the strut bars made a huge improvement in cornering. Shocks/struts and springs are next on the list, but I didn't want to put much money into upgrades until I had the car paid off, so I went with the cheap mods. The Antera rims happened in a moment of insanity, but it's a moment I'm thankful for every time I see my car!

I got one of those!!!!

Damn!!!

I just received one today. It's wierd cause it seems like you can just unbolt the rear wheel drive shaft assembly from the main tranny and you will have a normal Front wheel drive tranny. The wiring are the same. I am planning to work on it to see if it will fit an automatic 3000GT SL. I'll keep you updated as the weather gets nice and I'll work on it.

the normal AT has a serial number starting with JA

the 4WD AT has a serial number stareting with WA

Definately keep me updated on that plan! I know that you can't convert a 2wd to 4wd no matter what parts you have... What about the ittle spinning drive shaft bits left on? Anyway back to work....

Damn it!!!

The AWD Auto tranny from Japan does not fit. The driver side axle of the US version does not fit into the tranny axle gear. End of discussion. Sad to say:( If I had more time and money I would convert to an AWD SL:D

You would be much better off, both from a cost perspective and an amount of work perspective, buying a vr4 w/ a blown engine, and replacing it with an NA engine, if you want an AWD SL.

hey, and you would have AWS as a bonus!:p

On the Auto trannies there are different size splines.91 is a year all its own 92-93 are the same diameter only about 1/16"longer and the 2nd gens are a larger diameter. This is for the NA version. It's enough to drive anyone crazy.

I don't have AWS. :p

Seriously I am amused at how often people ask if converting an NA to be AWD comes up. It amuses me.

Forget about converting an N/A to AWD or putting an AWD automatic tranny in a FWD. I'm only interested in putting an AWD N/A tranny from Japan into an american AWD TT car. There were two AWD automatic VR-4's made in america for Mitsu executives. I assume that they used the JDM automatic AWD N/A tranny and a custom ECU to have the auto tranny to work with the turbos. Basically if you want an automatic AWD TT car your gonna need:

- Regular VR-4 or R/T TT to start with
- JDM AWD Automatic N/A tranny, transfer case, and rear differential (you need all those because they have a different final drive ratio and wouldn't work with the U.S.-spec x-fer case or rear diff)
- N/A ECU with fuel controller and other stuff to tune it (because the TT ECU won't controll an auto tranny)

I think if you could find parts to build that auto tranny to be stronger an AWD ATX TT would be THE BEST drag car. I wonder if the regular FWD ATX tranny parts would work in the AWD ATX. (like the shift kit, end clutch upgrade, LSD, etc.)

Maybe look into the DSM AWD AT. Considering the FWD is the same the AWD should be the same. Personally I'm not convinced that AWD would provide that much benefit with the ATX. I don't think that traction is our problem. Show me an ATX 3S that can smoke good tires through first before dropping the money into an AWD setup.
