Anyone else tranny bang when shifting REALLY fast?

This may sound stupid, but ive had enough people that have ridden in my car ask me about it that I thought I would make sure its normal. Please note im not talking about the thud that alot of people experience during normal shifting, this is for when im shift fast and at redline. In my VR-4, if im racing someone or shifting as fast I can, I let off the gas all the way, and push the clutch in. Then I shift as fast as I can into gear and QUICKLY let the clutch out. When I do this I get a very loud BANG that can be felt and of course heard... This happens for all gears, but most noticably audible onthe first to 2nd shift. The other VR-4 I test drove did this same thing during ultra fast shifting. It seems if I bring the clutch out slower then there is no bang. Anyone else have this? Am I not allowing the gear enough time to fully engage or is this just a side effect of shiftin' as fast as I can? :)
-Thanks!

I haven't tried this too many times, but whenever I do I notice what you are noticing as well. I think that even if you are shifting normally, letting the clutch out extremely fast makes the bang sound. (And I'm not talking about the notorious clunk that comes during normal shifting. I have that too, and it's different.)

edit: Actually the sound you are hearing may just be the notorious clunk in an extreme form. I am no expert, but my guess is that it has something to do with the speed of the clutch disc being lower than the speed of the engine. When you let the clutch out extremely fast inbetween a shift, it is either causing the engine to jolt on its mounts, or it is causing the transmission to jolt.

it may be your drivetrain. my buddy had a BMW and he raced it hard all the time and soon enough he had to get the cup link replaced in the drivetrain cuz it got pounded so hard.

Mine does this, but i put it down to the usual 'bang when shifting' problem that seems to be something to do with the carrier bearings.

On mine it seems like the same thing, only louder when you shift fast.

Carrier bearings and motormounts.

actually i do have carrier bearing problems...i think my rear one anyway, how much of a price is it to repair that siunce we're on the subject??

yep carrier bearing is worn...i'm not sure what happens if you leave it alone...lots of guys driving with worn bearings...good solid thuds under solid shifts.

I can get my car to do that any time i want but i don't do it =). I've noticed it will do it if you completely let off the clutch before giving it any gas. I never let off the gas completely. I know how to shift fast as shit and don't get that sound..but i know how to shift real slow and get that sound.

My car did that when my output shaft was worn to hell. Once I put in the new output shaft it no longer does that. Turbo Tension's 93 R/TT is doing that now and I saw when I put his clutch/flywheel in his car this weekend his output shaft and sleave in his transfer case were nearly gone. You might want to pull off the transfer case and take a peek. It's better than stripping the teeth off your output shaft while you're on the road and left dead in the water.

if its a "thud" i wouldnt worry about it to much...

if its a "bang" then listen up...

My last time at the track with my vr4 I was getting "bangs" out of my drivtrain. I though "hmm that doesn't sound good" and of course continued to dump the clutch and powershift. Two runs later I busted my transfer case into 5 pieces which took the bellhousing with it. Not a pretty sight. Be careful. Get under there and make sure you have the pencil bracket on the x-fer case. Make sure that all the bolts are tight. Perhaps remove the x-fer case to see if the inside teeth are wearing. If they are you can adjust the gear outward to grab more of the output shaft.

I think it's basically just a shock to your drivetrain when you're letting off the clutch so fast. Sometimes in the early morning driving when I'm not fully awake my shifts suck and I let the clutch out too quickly, I get the same thing, but only on the 1st to 2nd gear shift.

1 Question.... what about the clutch?

When I changed to the ACT 6 Puck from my stock... I started gettin a thump noise whenver i change gears. Unless I let the clutch out slowly. Thats normal for these clutches right? Or could it be my motor mounts?
