Well I guess I can start my build thread now that I am starting to get some progress on the RX7.
My progress will be updated here on this web page

http://www.venomspeedshop.com/RX7 Build.htm

Here is what is going on so far.

Picked up a 1995 Black PEP RX-7 that had been stolen and recovered then auctioned by the insurance company in 2000. The car had 35k miles on it when it was stolen then sat for 7 years till I came across it and bought it.
It was missing; thing that makes it go room room, Trans, Seats, Bumper, Wheels, Windshield, many interior parts and had 4 crappy shocks on it and a cut body harness. So I have been picking up the missing parts over the past year and now I am actually beginning my LS1 Swap.

Things I have Purchased

LS1 Mounting Kit from HinsonSuperCars.com
Includes:
Custom Subframe
Trans Mounting Bracket
Torque Arm
Bump Steer Correction
Aluminum Drive Shaft

From Dynotested.com:
Dakota Digital Speedometer correction
LS1 Wiring Harness Modification
LS1 Computer Tune
Steeda Tri-ax shift handle
Custom Shift boot
Adapters for RX7 Coolant and oil sensors

Other aftermarket parts:
Tokico 5 way adjustable Shocks/Struts
Tein S Lowering Springs
ADR Decidance Wheels 18x9.5 Rear 18x8.5 Front
Sumitomo HTR ZIII Tires 275/35/18 Rear 245/40/18 Front
Drilled and Slotted Rotors w/ Posi Quite pads on all 4 corners
Custom bonnet shocks (replace the damn bonnet prop)
Walbro 255lph Fuel pump
2000 Corvette Fuel Filter
Wilwood Clutch Master Cylinder
Hinson Supercars Clutch Line

2000 LS1 w/ 45k miles
2000 T56 6-speed Transmission w/45k miles

I am still waiting on some of the mounting parts but I am getting the fuel system, syspension, wiring, and interior taken care of so I can get this thing running asap.

Here are a few pictures.

Nice! I wish you the best in the build.

Kiss ass project, I love RX-7s and these LSx swaps have really been interesting me. You should post some vids when its all done of it in action.

I *believe* that he was considering some sort of remote-mounted turbo. Obviously there won't be any room in the engine bay after the engine slips in. I'm not POSITIVE, but I know he was looking into it. It would make for a monster.

#15 ·
Ya but how much of that was custom?? I wouldn't expect anyone to just be able to fab that up and bolt it up. Probably a bunch of one-offs. I do stand corrected that it CAN be done... but at what price? I don't think he's looking to spend THAT much money on this project. Who knows tho... badass car nevertheless

Hey thanks for all the positive feed back. I will surely keep you all updated on the progress. And if you want to see it run best sign up for the national gathering!! because i am planning on bringing it!!!

To the shame to see this done to such a rare car comment. The car was going to get trashed/ parted out by the previous owner and i bought the car for the sole purpose of doing the conversion so I am saving it in my mind.

then the turbo questions. Actually Hinsonsuper cars is currently working on making a kit for a single turbo. Its going to be pretty expensive. I think in a year or so Justin and I should be able to make something that will work

sweet project. I wanted a v8 Rex last summer. They would make an awesome daliy driver. but so would a v8 3s :) GL and keep us posted.

Ok here is a little update from yesterday. Its not a huge update but I got some work done at least.

Got the heat shielding in

Put the Carpet and Rear interior Pannels back in
I also ran the LS1 Wiring Harness through the firewall

Cut out the bottom of the passanger side storage bin, put heat sheild down and ran the wires for the battery. Since there isnt room for a red top optima under the hood any more

I have also been working on redoing the fuel system. The RX7's fuel system uses a feed and return line both coming from the fuel pump housing running to the engine. The LS1 only needs a feed line ran to it. I picked up a 2000 Corvette fuel filter that acts as a pressure regulator also. It has the feed and return built into it so i removed the RX7 fuel filter and am placing that one there. Then i am completely rerunning the fuel lines because I dont need the return and breather lines running all the way from the back of the car to the front.

Got the subframe put in. Tonight along with the control arms. And got some parts pulled off the LS1 to make it easier to put in the car.

And on the turbo cars. Hinsonsuper cars has a twin turbo that is their shop car. If you get on Hinsonsupercars.com you can watch videos of it running at the drags and on the dyno.

DUUUDE!! That's SOOOOO sweet!

I am jealous, I truly am!

You should have refinished the back interior pieces before reinstalling. May make great vinyl "paint" now that would really make it look brand new. IT would be easy now, even in the car... (maybe)

Wish I was going to the NG, it looks like you're surprisingly close to being done, it should go fast from now forward.

Don't mod the engine yet, leave something for later. I'd do NA power, it's the cheapest way on the LS1!

Thanks J. Yeah its coming along. The interior shit is just dirty. It cleans up nice so no paint will be necessary. hope you get to see this bad boy when its done.

Good to see progress being made on the RX-7, Fred. This thing is going to be sick when you're done!

Are you planning on having another Indy gathering this summer? I'd definitely like to see all the cool shit you guys have going on.
Thanks yeah its going to be a fun car. I am planning on having something when i get it running and when justin gets his 98VR4 back.

just out of curiousity, how does the fuel system work with a feed line but no return line?

nice project! Looks like a ton of fun!
Ben
Well the nice thing is the corvette fuel filter fixes that problem quite nicely. It has the feed and return going in one side then just one feed line going out to the front. So I just put that where the stock filter is and connect the lines from the tank then run the line from a corvette to the engine. Has the pressure regulator built in as well. Thanks!

Wow. Things are progressing much quicker than I would have expected. Great job.

Do most of the LSx conversions use complete custom sub frames? Is it possible, or does anybody just modify the existing sub frame to add motor mount brackets?
yeah the majority of people just but a custom one. There are 3 companys that make them. If you used the stock one there are only like 2 parts you would end up keeping and replace the rest so its really not worth it. A few people have custom maid their own but I am not a fabricator so this was much easier. The kit cost $1300 with the subframe, transmission mount, torque arm that runs from the trans to the rear diff, the drive shaft, and bump steer correction (basically custom tie rod ends)
And as always thank you for the praise!

Great progress, can really tell that you did your homework prior to starting the project. Looks clean!

Yes, he did. I think he has been collecting parts for like, 3 years (no exaggeration).

I think it was smart to wait until he had everything before starting the build. That way you don't get discouraged, you do it all while motivated and don't have to wait for parts.

I knew it would go REALLY quick once he had everything...

i really appreciate all the positive feedback! Dont worry though I still have a stealth RT that is becoming a FWDTT!! I am planning on bringing the RX-7 to the national gathering in memphis so all of you who want to see it better sign up for the NG!!!!! Im going to keep my record going of never bringing a stealth/3000gt to the NG.

LS1 FD = drool. ..

And in black, no less! Yum.

Great work. I can appreciate someone who does all the research on a project and buys every last piece for it up front. It's the anally retentive way. :)

What do you plan to do with the car once it's all together?
