Hi Everyone! For over a year now, I've been waiting for Liberty's Gears to finish the design work of modifying my 5 speed trans into a 1-4 dogbox. This process is called face plating, and involves removing the synchro mesh teeth from the gears, and welding dog plates where the mesh teeth were. Custom dog sliders are needed, as well as custom shift forks.

I am also having them treat all my gears and shafts. Shot peen and cryogenically treat the gears for strength...estimated at 15-20% stronger. Micro polishing all shafts and friction surfaces to reduce internal drag.

I'm posting here to let the community know that this project is finally moving closer to completion. Between 5-10 sets are being developed along with my parts. I would like to see some other members be able to take advantage of this. I'd also like to help spread the word to get a few more sets sold, seeing as they are doing all this R&D work for me to even make this happen.

If you are interested, I suggest you contact Terry at Liberty's Gears. (1-586-469-1140). Maybe we can have a bigger first run if there is more interest. Let him know you received this information from me. Liberty's Gears is a very well known company, and has been in the drag racing world for a very long time.

Picture is an example from their site, and not my actual Getrag gears.

The 6 speed has already been done by Liberty's. The 5 speed forks are what needed to be redesigned.

I like the 5 speed. I feel longer gears are better if you have the power to pull them.

I just spoke to Terry at Liberty's on Friday. He said the shift fork design work is on the owner's desk waiting for a final approval. Anyone reading this should get a hold of Terry if you are interested.

finally!! Liberty had a trans from Garrett for I think 2 years. Many promises, no results, but they should have had a head start on some of the dimensions and design. But eventually he said F it and went 4Gswap.

faceplated 5 speed should work well !

The quotes for services were reasonable. The extra processes being performed were in the neighborhood of $20-50 per part for each service. The shift forks and hub sliders are the bulk of the cost, but I do not recall the exact numbers. It also depends how many gears you want to have face plated. Call Terry, he can answer your questions.

Update:
I just got a call from Liberty's. They need my trans cases to finalize the shift fork design, and then it goes to production. My cases will be shipping out to them asap, so it shouldn't be long before they have it completed.

I got a phone call from Liberty's yesterday. They informed me that all the design work is completed, and that my job is now at the machining department. The machine shop is back logged with work for the next 8 weeks or so, and my stuff should be completed before the end of the calendar year.

With that being said, I was also told now is the time to tally up how many pieces will be produced during this machining run. I told management to again speak with Terry for numbers, as he mentioned to me that some of you have reached out to him. If you are interested in converting your 5speed into a face plated dogbox, and have not reached out to Terry yet, doing so now will reduce your waiting time.
