Hello every one, for the past few months I have been reading about everything right and wrong about the eclipse and 3000gt, I like the 3000gt overall but I cant afford a vr-4 but I can purchase a 1994 SL with 114k miles which has been well maintained. Now on the other hand I can buy a 1995 eclipse gsx with 144k with a lot of money sunk into it for a thousand less. I love boths cars and I wish I could buy both but I cant sadly. So the eclipse has better gas mileage on prem 20-30 whilest the SL has 19-24mpg on unleaded. Not to much of a difference I suppose but the gsx is awd drive and the SL is fwd so this also makes me wonder abit. I love both cars but I favor the 3000gt for more reliability then the eclipse but the eclipse also has the cheapest parts if you compare the two. This will be my first officially owned vehicle and I've narrowed it down to these two vehicles for my top picks.

Any words of advice from anyone I keep like one more then another one day and switching back and forth. lol

the GSX has lot of money sunk into it as in mods or maintance? if you mean mods I would stay away. Most moded, high milage DSm's have been beat to shit most of their lifes.

How much do you have to spend? There are some good deals out there right now...

well I may as well post the eclipse for reference

1995 mitsubishi eclipse GSX

I'm not going to post the 3000gt sl lol because this is of course a 3kgt forum ;D

but yeah, thats the info on the eclipse with no pics but the seller did email a few to me, lots of scratches.

i dont get it. why dont u post pics of the 3000gt ?

The gsx has a lot of work. Can you handle it if it breaks? How many miles are on all those parts? 144k like it says or is that on the body? Is the SL stock? You can find a good maintained clean VR4 in your price range. Ya just gotta look a little harder.

Both are going to have a considerable amount of upkeep. Personally, I'd only get a VR4 (not a fan of front wheel drive). You should buy BET-RHD's 91', I can't imagine a GSX being less than that, and the VR4 is 84762x cooler than a GSX.

I sold my 90' tsi awd to get my VR4, never looked back. I liked the handling on the tsi, it was glued to the road. But I'd never go back.

I'm going to assume that this means the GSX is modded already. The thing about buying a modded car is that you don't know how well it was done. I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that most GSX owners that mod their cars don't exactly take them to mechanics or performance shops.

Unfortunately most people that mod those cars aren't even qualified to perform an oil change properly and it shows in the work done on their vehicle. For a good example of this go to any car meet and take a look around, for every 10 cars that you say WTF and shake your head at, there is probably one that is built properly with a great attention to detail by a competent owner.

I saw stay away from cars that are already modified.

as a proud owner of a 98 gsx, I have had lots of fun and I love my car, would I ever trade it for a NA 3000? absolutely not, not because of it being faster, not because of looks, but because for the life of me, I hate front wheel drive, I absolutely hate it, I had a real bad experience which left me scarred for life on a Honda prelude once, now if you plan on ever having some fun, like on a track or something, get the gsx, and you can drive it in the snow and it's fairly better than the front drive

I love the 3000gt, I am just not sold into a N/A so I would say get the gsx, being cheaper also means you may have a few bucks extra to fix up a little more, parts for a 3000 are ridiculously expensive compared to a dsm

haha yea the N/A's are, Im sure. I own an R/T Stealth and havent had a problem =]

But as many have stated, it is usually a good idea to stay away from highly modded cars owned by, unfortunately to say, "kids" . Not discriminating or anything, just personal experience , and I know a lot of people who DO mod their eclipses, and they honestly dont care too much about it. And by the way the kid soiunds like he wants to get rid of it, and doesnt care what he sells it for doesnt really give me peace of mind. I know a 50 somethin year old who has a fully built GSX , he built himself and the thing is MINT, gorgeous and FAST as hell. Those are the kind of people I would buy a modded car from, then again, I believe in built not bought, so thats out of the question =]

I'd consider myself lucky like Colt45, my 3kgt has been far more reliable than my tsi was (granted, the tsi was 4 years older). I've had no issues with my 3kgt that prevented me from driving it, but it is stock with the exception of an exhaust.

I'd take the GSX over the 3kgt SL, but I'd take any VR4 over both.

I kinda felt the same way about the eclipse owner TwIIn but he has the only gsx in my state that is not overly priced.

I fixed the 3kgt photos, I had one posted twice so I replaced it with a different shot.

well you fellow's are convincing me more towards the 3kgt, but if I did buy it what would you say I would need to replace on the engine since its at 114k miles, just a ballpark guess type of thing, I plan on having one of these cars for atleast four years.

Kinds miffed at the guys saying dsm owners halfass build their cars. There's retarded "tuners" "modders" in every car. Hell my cars PO was one of them. But go take a peek at dsmtalk and tell me how many shady builds you see.
Granted virgin cars are usually a better buy. Even if you get a car modded correctly, if it breaks, you won't know how to fix it.

ugh...another thread turning into reliability...

Ill sum it up in one sentence this time..

If you drive your SPORTS CAR like a SPORTS CAR and baby it (not saying dont track it now and then), it will treat you good also; on the other hand, if you beat on any car and drive any car like a pissed off teenager...YES, you will have problems with its reliability...imagine that (sarcasm) :D

So yes, get a dsm for it to crank walk on you

Definition of crankwalk for noobs:

Crankwalk- Movement of the crank out of stock specifications. All cranks have L to R movement, to some extent, but an excessive lateral crank movement has bad reprocussions, such as hitting/grinding/destroying the crank sensor. A "walking" crank necessitates an engine rebuild. Any car can crankwalk, but Mitsubishi Eclipses, Plymouth Lasers, and Eagle Talons with a 7-bolt motor are notorious for this problem.
Used in a sentance from same site

My dsm crankwalked on me, but thankfully my dsm has broken down often enough to make me a real mechanic.
*insert usage of funny picture*

Please don't put regular in the SL :(

All things considered, go with the SL. Wait a while until you can save up some money for a VR4 (I'm not talking the car itself, save an extra 3 grand for repair costs).

Before purchasing my Stealth TT, I owned a '91 Tsi (fwd) and there is no comparison. IMO, fwd platforms just aren't nearly as fun!

As for reliabillity....each have left me panhanldling on the streets of Edmonton!

I would probably wait for a better option. Spending $3500 on a modified, salvage titled car doesn't make sense to me(gsx). Nor does it make sense to buy an FF NA 3000gt, if you crave performance or at least the potential for performance.
