Hello,

Has anyone on this forum ever changed the rear ratio to improve street performance? I have a non-turbo and it could use a little help starting off. I'm just curious if anyone has gone this route.

Someone once told me that he had a friend who down geared his stealth himself in about 30 min, but I don't really believe him. I asked a guy at a transmission place, and he said it was very expensive to change the ratio and hard work, and said nobody could do it themselves in 30 min. The kid who told me about the 30 min change also said no extra parts were needed, just mods to the gears. I'm very skeptical though. I was thinking that it might be possible to put in the tranny of a newer stealth with 6 speed in, but I have no idea if it would fit. I'm pretty sure the gearing is lower, that's why there are 6 instead of 5. I need more info though.

Thanks,

I was thinking more of the rear end rather than the tranny. I don't know what the current ratio is but lets say it's 355. I was wondering if it was changed to say a 390 if the performance would improve in a possitive way.

I am sure it would give you better acceleration. However, at freeway speeds in 5th you would be touring at higher RPM. That's something to consider if you use the car as a daily driver.

If drag racing is more important, a higher gear in the rear end will give you the most bang for the buck. Remember, that you may have to also have to adjust the speedometer sender unit. (I am not sure if this applies to the 3000 GT)

Subway, if you're thinking about changing the final drive ratio in the rear end of your non-turbo, you've got a lot of work to do. First thing you'll have to do is ADD a rear end.

Get under the car and take a look for yourself.

Heres how to gear your car down in 30 minutes.....

Buy a set of 15" wheels, and some 245/35/15's

Tada... revised gearing, and your car will be lower than stock!!!

All you'll need after that is four different doors of different colored primer, a BIG ASS "Powered by Honda" sticker, a 5" exhaust tip, and a HUGE stereo!!!
NO, Just kidding. I didn't think there was a final gear in a 3000GT like in a mustang or a corvette. If there is lemme know. I did hear a post from someone who put a 6 speed in a first gen, who said he had to change his "Final Gearing" to what he was refering, I know not.. it was a turbo however.

I love it Andrew! It appears changing the final drive gear is not as straight forward as I thought it might be. I just put 235-55-16s Goodyear Eagles on it. My old tires were a better brand but I had very little tread left. Car rides quieter now and ride has improved also. I was nervous about buying a used turbo model so I bought the non-turbo. I guess, I have to live with somewhat disappointing performance. I love the car and I just wish I could bump it up a tad...
