Fixed my lifter tick; 99 lifters are not required?

I dont understand why everyone here (including reputable members) preach about putting 99 lifters in their motor to fix the ticking sound.

My tick used to be horrible when it was cold. but after 2-3 minutes it would go away. Then, a few weeks ago it got to the point where the tick did not go away. Got quieter, but still audible at all times.

Ordered some completely generic lifters. Said I have a 98 3000gt SOHC (ive been told there are no non-ticking lifters for the sohc motors) from a local machine shop.
They were cheap (around 5 a piece, only need 12 rather than 24 so not so bad), I replaced the 6 in the front bank that is NOT under the intake plenum, and replaced my leaking valve cover gasket in the process. I soaked and compressed (with needle nose plyers) each lifter in ATF (automatic transmission fluid) for just a minute, making sure to get as much air out as possible

Sorry I dont have pics, but they look almost identical to the stock mitsubishi lifters. The hole on the side may have been SLIGHTLY larger.

At first, MEGA tick. They're brand new and have air trapped inside. But after the very first warmup - - - Tick gone. At start up, no tick. When driving, no tick. So it was one of the lifters in my front bank. I will eventually get to the rear side because the valve cover gasket is getting a little too leaky for me.

I guess it is just a matter of finding some lifters that actually work correctly?

^^ Yeah ATF worked fine. And I tried rislone twice and did not do much at all. In fact I dont think it changed my tick at all.

I'm just glad the tick is gone - and changing the front bank was EASY. W/o the valve cover gasket it probably takes only 30 minutes (including dipping of lifters in lub.)

I am not looking forward to taking the intake plenum off, there are one million and one things connected to the left side of it (when working in the engine bay "left")

At like $118 for 24 lifters we only pay like $5 a lifter as well, and the ones IPS has worked well for me. So that could be why everyone swears by 3rd gen. I suppose if you paid $5 a lifter for your generics and we pay $5 a lifer for our specific 99 ones it only makes sense for us to get 99s just because we have 24 to replace.
