engine overheating after sitting for 6 months

so my car was sitting for 6 months and i started it up and battery died. Turns out alternator was messed up, replaced it and now engine is overheating.

Any ideas on how i could trouble shoot the problem?

Check the coolant.

the level or the color? it was bright green coming out of the overflow

I would say your thermostat is stuck closed. Grab the radiator hose when your gauge says you're at operating temperature and see if its hot (not warm). If not replace the thermostat.
