Drove a VR4 for the first time and was insulted by the dealer

Usually when I go to test drive a VR4 the dealer has sold it before I get a chance to drive one, but I finally got to drive one today. It was my first time driving a VR4, and let me tell you, it is way different than driving my Stealth.
You could definitely feel the weight of the car when driving, especially around turns. Before driving the VR4, I always thought I had great breaks. The VR4 stopped on a dime and gave me change. When I first drove the car around, I drove it similar to how I drive my Stealth , i.e. shifting around the same times, giving it the same amount of gas, etc. I look down to see how fast I'm going, and I'm probably doing between 20-30 higher than I usually do given the way I drive. The AWD was pretty damn cool, although I don't think I really got to play with it as much as some of you other guys do. The highest I dumped the clutch was at 4K, and that was pretty cool. The car did have its share of problems. It seemed to hesitate when I first hit the gas, in any gear, making it bog down slightly. Some of the speakers were blown, and the power window motor on the drivers side was on its way out. Other than that and a few cosmetic details, the car was cherry.

Now to the insult part. The salesman said that they were asking $17-$18K for the car. Granted I've seen lower prices on here, but I was at a dealer so I just played along. They take off with my car to check it out, and when they come back tell me that I can have the VR4 for $15,000 plus tax, title, and tags. I laughingly said, "$15,000," to which the dealer replied, "yeah, we're going to give you $4,000 for your car." "What the fuck, $4,000," I said very furious. The salesman said, "Uh oh boss I don't think he's too happy with that number." I said, "No, I'm not happy with that, I'm actually really insulted," and walked out. I can't believe these shitheads actually think insulting potential customers will help sell cars. I know my car isn't exactly top of the line, nor worth a whole hell of a lot of money, but telling me that my car is only worth $4,000 is a fucking insult. I've had my car looked at for trade twice before, both within the past year. Once was when my engine was blown, and they offered me $4,000 for the car b/c they had to fix the engine in order to sell it, which was understandable. The other time was when I drove an R/T just for fun, and they offered me $6,500 for my car.

Anyways, thanks for reading my rant.

Not only did they insult you with only offering you $4000 they uped the price another $1000

I'm not trying to be a dick, but your car IS worth $3950 on trade in, according to Kelley. Retail, the thing is about $6400. This all assumes 80k miles and excellent condition (shiny paint, no dings, PERFECT)

It's just simple supply and demand. There's a glut of used cars right now due to trade ins, and base Stealths never had much demand to begin with. I don't make the rules, but I am forced to play by them :(

Actually, 4000 is a pretty good deal on your car for a trade in. When I was going to trade in my car to the dealer when it had problems, they wanted to give me $500 for it. I just laughed in their face and walked away. I could probably sell my rims for that much. Just a thought,

The same thing happened to me when I bought my Stealth. I was going to trade in my 94 GMC, and figured that the truck and $4000 would seal the deal. I was wrong, they wanted the truck and $7000. I told them no way on the trade in but offered them $10,200 and a $5000 down payment, The saleman came back and said $10,800, and I just told him that $10,200 was as high as I was going and started to get out of my chair. Lets put it this way, he agreed to $10,200. He knew if I walked he lost the sale. The funny thing is I offered them $11,000 a week earlier, The dealership was asking $12,500. He said he allready had a buyer at $11,000 so refused my offer, typical car salesman trick. I sold my truck for $7500 a couple of weeks later. Car salesmen play games, just don't play. Find out what a fair retail price is, lay the offer on the table, and stick to your guns, Be prepared to walk out if you can't come to an agreement on price. Sell your car outright, you will make out better then trading it in but sometimes you will have to hold on to it for a while. With a small down payment it is pretty easy to get a loan on a vehicle then when you sell your car make a big payment to the loan company and you will take care of a lot of interest, or you could put that money into modifications.

That's ok, I test drove a SL spyder with a few problems (counting a lousy repaint) and they offered to give me $7 for BOTH of my cars TOTAL. AND, they wanted $25k for the SL spyder with 68k miles on it. I kindly laughed and walked away. They said they couldn't give me much for the 3000GT cause it had too many mods and it would be hard to sell. I told them I wouldn't have a problem selling it :).

Those salesmen will always make it sound like such a good deal as they are ripping you off. You definately need to know what you are willing to pay when buying a car and what you're willing to expect from your trade in. (or selling it on your own)

Dont get to bent out of shape, you just need to play the game till you get the price you want from those places.

Yeah! I was offered an average trade in on my 97 base 3000GT and decided I'd rather try and sell it straight out. I picked up my 97 Pearl VR4 with 46,500 miles about 1.5 months ago for $24,900(minus tax and license). They had it for around $27,000 on the lot. It took me about 2 days to get them down to $24,900 which I originally started the offer at $24,500. I didn't mind to pay a lil more because the car seemed to be in pristine shape other than the badly scuffed rims which I found after I had bought it!:( And it still had some warranty on it.

All in all, I was happy with what I paid and felt I got a good deal on it. Kelly Blue Book says my car booked for $27,125 retail with 46,000 miles, so I don't think I did to bad. ;)

What they're asking for the car doesn't matter. Neither does what they offer you for your car. You're interested only in the difference between the two. The actual figures don't mean squat.

Figure out a fair price for your car on the market. Then do the same for theirs. Take the difference between the two and that's what you're willing to pay, plus tax and a few hundred bux profit (they do have to make some profit).

Salesmen are taught to lowball your car's value so you do get insulted and focus on that number and not the pricing difference. Then they've got you to stop arguing the asking price of the car and to focus on what they're offering for yours. Then they'll go up a bit and if you buy, you're still paying more (because of a larger difference) than you may have otherwise done.

A 92 Dodge Stealth base is only worth about 4k. How much did you think it's worth? They don't care about what you did to it. They just give you the value of the car, and depending on milage, you may get less.

Agreed, I wouldn't pay more than 4000 for a base, even in great condition. I paid for my 92 ES (thats the DOHC engine) 5000 this may. Now they're even cheaper! But it's not really an ES anymore :)

Just curious, how much were you hoping to get for your car on a trade? By th way, you shouldn't trade your car, sell it on your own, unless you have a shit load of problems, if you insist on trading, don't tell them that you have a trade until after you have negotiated a price on the car that they are selling. Dude, I have a 92 turbo, and I wouldnt be surprised to get offered 4000 for a trade on that. There is always room to move when a dealer is selling a car. They have to start high and negotiate down, otherwise they would be dropping their pants starting off. And if they wont budge on price, they will probably offer to throw shit in for free. Insist that they fix any and all problems with the car. And when you look at the car, point out all the negatives, they are going to do it to you when they look at your car. Sorry for going on for so long, just my two cents worth.

Kevin-

As I recall, there are some extenuating circumsances not in my right to bring up about the car. But I will say this-

Don't take offense if a dealer cannot quantify personal attachment to a car if it is there. To them, it is simply a product, something to sell and make a profit on. If it is more than that to you, then by all means take that into account.

As I said in my first post, I've had my car looked at to trade in twice before. Once was when my engine was blown and in need of a rebuild. They offered $4000 then. The second time was recently when I was looking at an R/T. They offered $6500. That's what I was expecting. Granted, they do use imaginary numbers. They probably got that VR4 for $15000 and were just trying to make a profit.

You're right Kenneth, there are other circumstances behind my car. That's probably why I've never found another car that can match up to her ;)
