belt near A/C belt... what is it?

Ok so I'm walking towards my idling car today and notice a odd little "shhhhhshhh" coming from my driver's side of the engine. So I pop it and that belt that normally turns at constant speed (I think it does anyhow) is varying in speed. I assume this means it is slipping. Also the metallic looking round thing(roller?) at the bottom front of this area looks to be moving slightly not in a circle. It is my guess this is rickty or something.
Also, I should note that I have problems with my A/C belt making noise and I solved it by just not using my A/C since the belt dressing seemed to only work for a day or so...

Two questions:
1. Is this bad?
2. What can I do about it? How do I do this?

there are 3 belts, two that you should be able to see. The thick one towards the front of the car is for a/c and alternator. The skinny one towards the rear is for the power steering. The belt that you cant see (under the covers) is the timing belt. Maybe they just need adjusted?

Should the power steering one be at varying speeds? I think it is the front one that is rickty.

How do I adjust these? What tools do I need?

on my car, my crank pulley slipped on the dampener disks, and practically ate my ac belt and started munching on my power steering belt

only after I took it off and replaced it with a 3sx aluminum one, did I realize how bad of a shape it was in.

belts will cost you about 35 bucks for both, for goodyear gatorbacks

stock replacement dampener pulley was quoted at 299 from murphy mitsubishi around here

3sx pulley with belts was 192 shipped to me

So you guys think new belts and dampener pulley? Which one is the dampener pulley (if you can try to describe)?

To get at this stuff can I just jack it up and take my drivers side wheel off? Do I need to and if so how can I easily get a good look at this to better judge the problem.

Also, is it safe to drive in the condition?

I believe the dampener pulley is also refered to as the crank pulley. Check 3sx.com they have a pictures of it under the section:engine external boltons. It's the large one that seems to be most centered with the engine.

You will need to jack the car up onto jackstands and remove the drivers wheel as well as the plastic panels behind the wheel and......... Actually just check stealth316.com there are write-ups as well as pictures. You can look for it under the 60K mile tune-up I believe.

If you want to get the pulley off though you're going to need a special tool which isn't going to be cheap from mitsu. It looks like a metal Y (shape). I fabricated my own out of 2 steel bedframe sections and a 3 bolts. You need this tool to hold the pulley still so it doesn't spin while you loosen the nut in the middle.

I don't really want to comment on wether it's safe or not to drive in that condition. I'd say no, it's not really dangerous but hey you never know. If you snapped the belts while you were driving you could lose power steering and get into an accident. Even worse it could be 98 degrees out and you could loose you AC:eek:.

Good Luck
