I have to change my oil and I only use mobil 1 fully synthetic but I noticed they don't make a 10W40 (like mitsubishi recommends)... Any ideas?

Yeah, I just bought a five quart jug of 10w40 at Wal-Mart this weekend.
Is it that 5000 clean type though? I don't know if I'm into that... I just want my good old mobil 1 and that's it.

they changed the formula apparentyl.

I am going to use Royal Purple on the next change and from now on.

TS - used mobil 1 0-40 European spec for years. It was a great oil.

apperantly the high mileage formula is the old stuff. the other is a new crappy formula.

Just an FYI, I don't have the numbers off hand, a buddy of mine worked for a local engine builder. Very reputable shop, builds lots of race engines for teams, etc. The tested an engine on the dyno with various oils and lost HP with Royal Purple. I don't know how much but I want to say it was between 5 and 10HP.

Why? I am looking to upgrade my oil since my power and boost is going up, so is my heat production.

I don't mine loosing a few hp if it protects my engine better?

Agreed... I used royal purple in my old car. I didn't notice a difference in performance but what I did noticed is that my engine burned that up like crazy... I switched back to mobil 1 and have never looked back.

There should be a sticky made about what type of oil should be used for which car and in which geographical location cause there are wayyyyy too many threads about oil.
That would be great, the problem is I don't think anybody would ever agree on what type and weight of oil should be used :p. Everybody has their own opinion and there really isn't any right or wrong answer as to what should be used.

0-40 mobil 1 is the hp king but you will be changing oil more often.

Im still paranoid about this formula change issue. Makes me afraid to use any oil all of a sudden.

I'm in the same boat you are...

I used 3 quarts of it on my last oil change along with a quart of 5w-30 and a quart of 15w-50. I started the thread about the new Mobil 1 10w-40 about a week ago. However, in light of it not being a "true" synthetic, I decide to spend the $$$ and use Royal Purple 10w-40. I don't know if it's my mind but the engine seems to be a touch smoother.

Why doen't tje Mobil1 0W40 have the stamp saying it's approved for gas engines an all?

I just switched from Mobil 10-40 to Royal purple.

I notice my oil pressure is a little higher now, and it seems to be more resiliant to getting hot. I know I took several people out for back to back runs when I put in my rear turbo yesterday and my oil pressure never changed.

Even at idle after all those pulls it was still good, unlike that waterd down mobil 1.

Mobil 1 waterd down? What do you mean exactly? Also when I used royal purple (when I had my SL) it burned a lot more which leads me to believe it does not provide as good heat protection... I could be wrong though

RP does burn up if you've got worn seals while other oils won't. RP does a real good job of flushing out your engine.

However, I know I've got bad VSS, and I only ever burn oil if I engine brake. As long as I take it easy with compression braking, I don't burn more than a tiny bit each change.

Don't blame RP for the burning of oil. Blame your leaky engine.

Considering changing out to Redline next change, just to see what, if anything, the higher Mo content does for me.

I've also ran the snot out of my car with RP in the engine, and had no problems keeping up with others using M1...except that damn car with the 15Gs!

Ignore HP loss from oil. Want to lose less HP? Use a thinner oil.

Happy spun bearings!

Mobil 1 changed their formula last year. It is no longer the same mobil 1 but in the same boat as all the other synthetics.

You may be interested in the discussion going on at MY350Z.com on the topic of the recent changes in the composition of Mobil1...

In essence, Mobil apparently tried to sue Castrol for falsely claiming they were selling a "synthetic" oil and Mobil lost. It seems Mobil then decided simply to do as the other oil companies do and not bother to make a strictly synthetic oil. The thread is somewhat lengthy but worth the read.

So wait... Mobil 1 is no longer completely synthetic?

So then, I take it Royal Purple is 100% synthetic motor oil? Redline and Motul make good products (I use motul break fluid) but I just haven't heard much about their motor oils.
RP is a Grp IV mostly PAO, so yes, it is full synthetic. Personally from the VOA's I would go with Redline before RP.

Motul is just not too common in the US. It's more common elsewhere (Europe, Australia etc.). Over here, it's considered a 'boutique' oil, i.e. rare + expensive, but the 300V formulas are actually tested and used in motorsports (I think the 10w40 or 5w40 is used in WRC and the 20w60 has actually been run by some teams in Le Mans).

The difference is that (like Redline's 'street' oils), these same oils actually have a good enough additive pack to be used as a street oil and not solely as a pure race oil. Both Redline and Motul's techs say their oils are fine for daily driving and even extended drain intervals and they're exceptional for track days and hard driving.

I recently made thew switch to Royal Purple 15-40 .

My idle pressure has gone up and it is more resiliant to loosing pressure after hotlapping the car.

pull after pull, oil pressure remains the same. I got mine at Oreilly's autoparts for 7.49 a quart. I believe NAPA carries it for the same price. For a dollar more than Mobil 1 extended performance its a no brainer.
