Ok well I'm fairly sure my car has lifter tick because I've been hearing the sound for almost a year now and my bother and I heard it when I bought it and my mechanic said everything looked ok and I would think if I had rod knock, the engine wouldn't have lasted a year, am I right?

Ok well this has happened once before. I was driving to a friend's house and there is about a half mile of country road before his subdivision so I got on it a bit and when I slow down to turn in i hear a distinctly different ticking/knocking sound. It almost sounds like...you know the sound usaully associated with old, junk cars? that almost put put put sound? Ya it was doing that. I've never heard rod-knock but I would ahve bet anything that this is what it sounds like. Did it at idle, in park, neutral, got louder if revved all that. Turned the car off and when I left an hour later it was still doing it. So I drove as gingerly as I could (going about 25 in the 45 --but road was clear--and keeping the rpms as low as I could) I'm thinking, shit I broke something. Well about half way home, I suddenly don't notice it anymore. I mean I still have the old tick but the new knock is gone. I drove the rest of my 10 minutes home still taking it easy but the sound was gone. THis exact same thing happened about 5 months ago. Wtf is going on? I'm getting my oil changed this week and I know I should have them check the oil for metal shavings to make sure I haven't spun a bearing and if everything is ok all my other planned mods are being put off in place of a new oil pump and maybe a fuel and oil filter too.

rod knock won't come and go. It stays. At idle you usually won't hear it, but you will once you rev the engine up. It's very loud, and sounds scary. You know when you have rod knock.

The sounds you may be hearing are probably just from having a low oil level. Just by the design of our engines, the lower the oil lever gets, the less oil goes to the heads.. the less oil getting to the heads, the more the lifters make noise. If course, if you have high mileage, it's also possible that some or all of your lifters are collapsed.

This stuff cleared up my lifter tick INSTANTLY. It went away for about 5,000 miles then came back. So maybe every other oil change you should try to use this stuff.

Ya this definantly started and stopped about 2 hours later. And I could easily hear it at idle and when I was driving I could even hear it over the road noise. Drove a little today and it's still gone. I don't know what's going on and my car doesn't have that high mileage (79K) so I guess if everything checks out when I change the oil I'll still buy a new oil pump and just hope for the best. Anyone have suggestions for good, better than stock oil pumps that aren't insanely expensive?

SilverBullet is right to the extent that you will hear rod knock all the time but in my case it started out as bad lifter tick then progressed to rod knock. I would hear a slight taping at 3k RPM and then it would go away only to get worse to the point where it was heard all the time. My advice is to get a professional engine flush as I suspect you have sludge occluding many of your oil passages which is chocking off the flow of oil to vital components.
