Here's what i did today with Chai at his shop. Ran into a few issues, from which Chai had solutions for each... good times. Now I stop on a dime!

thanks Jojo for giving me the calipers, and to gabber for helping get me the knuckles, and dave for letting me borrow his steel braided lines so i could get these made perfectly... I appreciate it!

(this is mirrored here: 3000GT SL to VR4 Brake Caliper Upgrade

Today I finally got some braking power, and went from the anemic SL brakes from my NA Spyder to 1st Gen VR4 brakes (my spyder is a twin turbo conversion.... all the weight, plus the sppeed.... still small brakes). I don't believe 1st gen are as big as second, but these were free and available, so I went ahead and did it :)

First, here are the new stainless steel aircraft grade braided hose lines I will be using for my brakes. I will be selling these through deftracing.com, and they are top quality.

Here's what my cars calipers used to look like. I went for a honey bee look before to match the side lights, but the yellow was really hurting, and I wanted to go red.

Image

Looking worn...turning whitish from the old darker yellow.

Image

haggard.

Image

I did do some prep on the new calipers though. First, i shaved the Mitsubishi name off with a grinder, and smoothed it out very nicely. I then used high temp caliper paint to lay several layers of red on it.

I also had something in store for the new caliper to see how it looked... and to match perfectly the rear logo on my car =)

Image

Here's the VR4 knuckle installed. There's probably a real name for this part, but I don't know it if there is =)

You can see the old caliper hanging there too. This backing looks horrible. It doesnt matter, you dont see it at all behind the rotor.

Here's my new red caliper and the install of the new stainless braided line. Perfect fit :)

Oh snap... JDM OG logo! Woot. Came out nice!

Image

Fitting the caliper on the installed rotor.

Image

Think I needed new pads? Decided to change out the rears too when I saw this. Doh!

Image

The brake pads install through the back of the caliper.

Image

Uninstalling the knuckle on the other side.

Image

See how easily it comes out? It didn't, this is after some hammering.

Image

There's the new stainless line installed. Yum. I didn't replace the other line, although I should have. I needed to make another though, and I did not have time. next time!

Image

And here is a pic finished. I didn't have time/light enough to take a good pic, but soon! The GTO logo looks great behind the wheel... and I wish I could see it with the wheel spinning on the freeway, when you can see it well/read it.

A little closer.

Are those actual rear garnish GTO badges? :lol3:

#5 ·
Well, i made them from a JDM GTO emblem I did get from japan, so in that sense, yes. Are they as big as the real rear emblem?, no... the rear is 8.5" wide, these are 5.5". I have both sizes, I just havent put them on the site for sale yet. These were originally intended to use on the side skirt.

I took a digital high res pic, imported it into photoshop, and laid out a vector path to use with the sticker cutter machine. It is the exact same dimensions as the real badge of our cars.

yes 2G brakes are about half inch larger.

also...stealth calipers = no shaving the name off. its already smooth.

Looks amazing deft... The GTO really sets them off, and they are def. one of a kind...

So.. you will be selling GTO badges... i'd love to get one.. not too interested on the sticker type.. id like more of a badge for the rear... let us know..

I'd like to just say something.

Screw VR4 owners.

...For nothing more than I am jealous of the stopping power I now have and mad I didn't have it before! =) ... I can't believe I waited this long to do this.

Mitsu really did a disservice to Spyder owners by not giving the SL Spyders the VR4 brakes they desperately need with the extra convertible weight. I am ina spoecial position of the TT conversion, so I have extra speed, weight, and still had the small brakes that are the same as a fricken ECLIPSE!

btw, thanks Jojo for giving me the calipers, and to gabber for helping get me the knuckles, and dave for letting me borrow his steel braided lines so i could get these made perfectly... I appreciate it!

+1 on the upgrade, and I agree it looks AWESOME!!!

Like Steve said, you could have skipped the shaving step if you got Stealth calipers :)

Your car just keeps improving!!!!

It's such a great thing to do... don't wait! What a difference.

Yeah, after that someone pointed that out. But, for the price of 20 minutes with a grinder the ones Jojo gave me were just fine :) Since Jojo was the tester car for the ROTORA brake kit, he had these laying around.

What I can't fathom is how nice it must be to stop with a BIG brake kit, if these are so nice now :)

I also took the time to polish them out, make them a bit flatter than stock too as I took off the mitsu wording. I also was able to take off a few areas I didnt like.... clean it up just a little.

I have benefitted once before by using stealth parts to debadge my engine bay... where it just say dohc v6 now.

Thanks for the compliments :)

Oh, for the record, and to be helpful anyone wanting to do this, I DID need a 6mm spacer with the offset on my car. This was a nice suprise, and by nice, i mean shitty.

What did I use for spacers to get my car to F1 motorsports to pick up some last minute spacers? hahahaha... head bolt washers. LOL. F'ing ghetto.

The stock caliper bolts were also to short, we used some we had that were too long... cut them down, and we were good to go.

Also, 95 NA ABS sensor mounts differently than the 1st gen VR4.... so I now do not have ABS. Apparently, noone likes ABS anyways, so I mat just pull the whole damn system.... peice of junk dead weight, just like the driver now :)

Maybe I should start a thread about your most ghetto temporary replacement/fix. ha. I know that's my most dangerous/stupid/worked well fix.

I've had mine for a long time. It's a great upgrade. In fact they feel better on an NA than on vr4s ;)

#24 ·
so im guessing the spacer was for backspacing for the larger caliper and nothing to do with offset?

BTW, Deft, how much you want for your NA spindles/hubs?

#29 ·
...I havent priced them yet, buty I will sell them eventually. they were cleaned down and sprayed with several coats of red caliper paint when Ai took them off to prep them for sale... they look sweet.
are you talking about the spindles? why on earth would you paint them?
I am interested in buying the parts the caliper bolts to.

Very nice.

So the 1st gen knuckle is absolutely necessary if I'd be installing 1st GEN VR4 brakes onto my 2nd gen 95 NA?

I ask cause I have the brakes for 1st gen VR4 upgrade, but I do not have the knuckles.
