Simple question regarding Oil pressure light/switch

I want to be sure mine is working correctly.

When I put the key in the ignition, the oil light comes on, when I turn the car on, it goes away and never comes on again as it shouldn't.

Well I've been worried about my low oil pressure for a while now, my mechanical gauge shows as low as 9-10 psi idle but the shop said there's too many kinks in the line for it to be reading accurately. The oil light does not come on.

How possible is it for the oil light switch not to be working correctly and my pressure truly is dipping that low and the light SHOULD be coming on but it isn't despite the fact that it does work with the key in the IGN position?

In other words, is the bulb simply turning on? or is the bulb receiving a signal from the sender to turn on because of 0 oil pressure?

The light is verifying that the switch is closed with 0PSI. Its supposed to open at anything above 11psi but it could be faulty in that it opens at a lower PSI than its supposed to, so the light doesnt come on until perhaps 3 or 4 PSI (or any other number less than 11). All you know for sure right now is that you have more than 0 PSI when the engine is running.
