Propshaft Centre Mount.

As part of my vehicle inspection the chap brought up a potential future issue with my centre popshaft mounting.

There is a lot of play in this mount.

I seem to remember it had always been like this and not caused any issues but was just wondering what a "good" one feels like?.

Are they supposed to be a solid mounting?.

What's my best option for repair if this does need sorting out, is it possible for me to do at home or is it a professional refurb job?.

I've pulled the engine and geabox etc a few times now so capable with the spanners.

Any input appreciated.

I just replaced mine recently as part of a larger job rebuilding the rear subframe. I went with OEM style carrier bearings, which do have some play to them. Mine were shot. The prop shaft could jump around inside the housings. The new ones feel nice and tight, the play is in the flexing of the rubber around the bearing. You can also go with poly ones that will have no play but I had read you can get a lot of noise in the cabin with those.

This is not a hard job to do on your own. But absolutely follow the service manual procedures and mark the prop shaft before taking apart. Otherwise, you end up spending a lot of money having a shop rebalance the prop shaft like me.

Do you know any supplier for the Poly mounts?.

Noise isn't an issue, it has stripped out interior and Twin Walbro 255's lol.

These guys have some nice parts and good prices. I ordered from them recently and the stuff shipped pretty quick.

I've decided to go half way, ordered a set of standard mounts and have filled them with Polyurethane PU40.

I chose some good quality aftermarket mounts (ÂŁ135 UKP a pair).

They came with the bearings fitted backwards which apparently is a thing. A good push on a socket with the metal side down popped them out (with a little help from a trim tool).

Fitted them right way round easily enough, luckily the bearing is not bonded to the bellows.

The mounts I bought lent themselves perfectly to be pumped full of PU adhesive, I used 2/3rds of a 300ml cartridge per mount.

They are now setting up for fitting on Sunday hopefully.

This should be half way house between standard and the full on race mounts hopefully
