The 315-Watt Mitsubishi/Infinity® CD Audio System with 7 Speakers

Prerequisite:

There is always someone that wishes to maintain that stock audio appearance in their car, I am a supporter of this. For about two years I have been playing around with ALL Mitsubishi stock audio as they relate to 3S audio in the several cars we have owned. I have always disliked the 1G audio and have not wasted any time testing it. The goal has been toward improvement not taking steps backwards. To this date that has included the purchase of 32 different Mitsubishi products. I have taken a mental note of the reliability of many of these products and the various quirks they may have while establishing a "Junk pile" of 7 radios and 10 cd changers. These were only the Non-refundable purchases! The main reason for such a large purchase of these radios was the pursuit of the late model "Stock Mitsubishi " radio that had compatible steering wheel controls. I would like to thank Mike Deal and Golfpro for their code assistance. Other research was steering wheel control addition particularly at it related to the 95 RT/TT.

The first (single din) Faq is here http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=292127 . The Double Din Faq isn't complete.

I literally stumbled across this amp while in the process of buying mitsu radios for faqs. I came across a good deal 2 infinity dash speakers 4 door speakers, an infinity sub, radio and amp. These were all from a 2003 Montero Limited. The Headunit is in the 95 RT/TT now, and the speakers were sold all but the sub. So I consider the 315 watt amp free. :D I figured it would be a welcome upgrade for the wife's 99 infinity system. But It needed a sub since the infinity sub was clearly inferior. The national parts yard I buy many products from had an 05 Rockford Fosgate sub from a Nissan posted. I saw 4 wires on the plug and thought maybe it was powered. But it wasn't, it is an 8" dual voice coil 2 ohm sub. Go figure this is a stock audio speaker!

A quick look at the amp; yes its bigger and heavier and by mitsu specs it doubles the 3kgt amps. But does the stock amp plug I have fit? Yes! The next step was to verify the wiring. A post at the Montero site netted no replies for a wiring diagram. After a few months I noticed ebay now had Montero manuals with wiring diagrams so I bought the receiver diagram. It was a good thing I didn't plug it in as the power wires were on different terminals!

Re: The 315-Watt Mitsubishi/Infinity® CD Audio System with 7 Speakers

With the wiring not being compatible between the 99SL and the 03 Montero amp. (There was only 1 correct wire.) It was easier to pull all wires from the 99 plug and switch them to the Montero's wiring. (The amp plug has two wings that fold back. After you do that you need a jewelers screwdriver to release the nylon pin holders from the front. You just hold the pin lock tab on each pin so you can pull the pins. Once you get the first few it is really easy. )
Two wires were then added for the sub output because the 18 pin plug only has 16 wires and all 18 wires are needed for the Montero amp. With the new amp installed it had to be carefully tested to see if it was 1 ohm stable. Because if you connected the two voice coils in parallel it would equal 1 ohm. There were some cracking noises at 1 ohm so both voice coils were immediately connected in series and solved the amp stability issue.

Review:

The 99SL has Diamond 361 component speakers, stock infinity rear's, and now the Nissan sub. Aside from the sub it has a stock appearance. Smokin we need a 8" sub box for the right side preferably at a slant. (Smile) I would rate it at 3x better than stock with more than enough umph for the person that's not into the boom boom.... It made her car more enjoyable for me to drive too. Keep in mind that your hearing this from someone in their late 40's and not in their 20's. :D

I voted for Dave's wifes car for best audio...sorry bnorris. I think the fact that hes out trying to figure out what works well without spending x,xxx dollars is the best for the platform. However I do think maybe smokins corner box would be better than the nissan box.

The stereo sounded very clear, no distortion. This "mutt" stock audio system rocks. Sure, not as heart pounding as bnorris's stereo but the trunk is still useablke and dont have to worry about the stereo being missing overnight. Dave, you should put together audio kits for sale

Thanks Bob and Brian :D

Of course we can't vote for the wifes audio so.

Brian received audio votes from us :) I liked the HU too

I'd love to have a blue 95 RT/TT if you both know what I mean!!

Now if I could find a stock one that plays MP3's .... and Smokin Made an 8" right corner box for us old guys...... it never ends.

I think at the next gathering im going to put a sign in my trunk that says "don't be shy, sit inside"

The way my shit is set up its not loud if your standing behind the trunk area. Also they had me turn it up so much to hear the subs that the speakers inside were way to loud if you sat in the seat. I just dont listen to my music that loud lol.

its too bad that mag didnt have his stereo on, it was very clear from what i heard. Having the sub firing into the glass like he had is the best.

All I know is, when Dave tells me not to take my car to work, I never know what he is going to do next.

This time it was a good thing. I kept blowing my stock speakers and the radio wasn't even that loud. Now it's SMOKIN :p

I can hear the radio with my sunroof open and all the windows down, unfortunately, so can my neighbors.

I had put the windows up before I started up my hill and there was my neighbor dancing to the music from my car--with the windows up

I saw this on e-bay, something you might find interesting:

http://cgi.ebay.com/PERIPHERAL-MITA...TER-MITSUBISHI-INFINITY_W0QQitemZ5817109340QQcategoryZ50546QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Supposedly you can use aftermarket amps with the stock Infinity amp using that cable.

Also, do you know if those single-din Infinity headunits will plug into a 91-93 car? I saw a 95TT with Infinity speakers using the non-Infinity double-din headunit and it was working. I've also seen the same headunit (looks the same) on 91-93 non-Infinity cars, but it's possible it's a different model headunit that just looks the same.

Thats a great cable! It can be used either way Stock HU on an aftermarket amp or replacement hu on the infinity amp. Check out my amp installation thread in my sig for the cable uses, and the 3si audio faq.
Anything is possible recently I made a plug and play adaptor to test non infinity stock units in infinity systems. ( a line output converter wired between two radio plugs 1 male and 1 female)
I have sold several infinity conversion kits they can be installed in any non infinity 6 speaker Mitsu. Eclipse and talon too.

Obviously the car had different speakers in the front but the wiring was never touched at the amp for that install (look in my sig for the link) The amp plug has to be rewired. Excellent write up, and it sounds like you scored big points with Deb. Always a good thing. Great ideas on how to upgrade and still remain "stock."

Dave if you start collecting the plugs you could make an adapter and sell the amp and the plug as a kit, I bet you could sell quiet a few of them. do you know all the specs on the amp? RMs and max watt per channel?

Need males and females though :D I guess you've done some pin pulling :)

RMS wattage??? If one would assume worse case and Mitsu to rate it at 315 Peak. So 160 RMS watts is reasonable Via the peak/2 formula. Or is it the peak x.707=220 watts formula that applies. But then again since the distortion spec never comes into play in these factory systems maybe its 315 watts rms @ 10% distortion. All we have to go by with these is the advertised spec. One good thing is they are still making the amp in 06

John it is the Montero limited amp. Mitsu advertises it as 315w. More than triple the advertised power Dodge listed the infinity as in the 95 brochure I just looked at. But I have seen it advertised higher too! They don't say anywhere in any literature I have seen what the Rms specs are. The part # is visible in one of the pics I made sure of that. I have had this 03 amp for almost a year and a half and have tried a few times to get the specs online. Even bugged that online car stereo repair place that can get circuit schematics, and they say that info is not on them as it is not pertinent to their repair. So without the test equipment to determine its RMS output... It does sound like there is 40 watts at the doors and rears with a clear tweeter output, and the addition of the sub completes the system. The sub does not seem to be louder.

Re: The 315-Watt Mitsubishi/Infinity® CD Audio System with 7 Speakers

The headunit is the origional stock one. There is a pic of the car and HU here. http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=217491

This amp works in a 3kgt with any stock (Mitsu) single or double din INFINITY Headunit that has a display. But there are only 4 Infinity HU's with Steering remote inputs.

Well the amp cable connector's price is down from $28 to $13. I have an amp. I bought a cable and will make a kit, I'll put it on ebay at the end of the month or so.

CAR STEREO INSTALL KIT 70-7002 MISTSUBISHI 97-99

I guess they don't know it's good for 94-96 too

Re: The 315-Watt Mitsubishi/Infinity® CD Audio System with 7 Speakers

Dave57, I just bought one of these amps. Keeping the stock HU (99SL) and replacing door/dash with Infinity 6020CS. Can you tell me how to rewire the plug? (I understand how to do it, but don't know which slots to move the wires to.) Also, I have no plans to add a sub at this time. Is there something that can be put in the sub circuit to take the load? Barring that, can you recommend a cheap & easy sub that can be stuck in with a minimum of fuss? Thanks for any help.
John
