Bob Marley's Legend is proabably the best reggae collection I've ever heard. Peter Tosh is very well known, another artist from back in the day. I don't think too many artists have been as consistent as Marley was in terms of quality reggae.
I personally prefer punk/ska that has reggae influence. Bands such as Sublime and Long Beach Dub All Stars (The album Right Back) are definitely worth checking out. 311 also throws out the occasional reggae-sounding tune.
Goto Amazon.com and search for reggae. You'll find a ton of artists and songs you can preview (at least 30 seconds of each song).
