VR-4 Owners: How long it take you to get used to the power?

I remember when I took my first high-speed excursion in my VR-4 shortly after forking over the $$ for it... I floored the accelerator and found myself unable to breathe due to being sucked back in the seat so hard. It was awesome!

As time has passed, though, I have become accustomed to the powerful pull of the VR-4 and now hardly pay any attention to it. Winding out the tach barely catches my attention, much less takes my breath away. I was reminded of my long-gone thrills a few nights ago, though, when I sped up to pass a car and the girl with me screamed in terror saying "Some warning would have been nice!!" :D Ahhhhhh... the power is still there.

So how long did it take you to get used to the power?

heh.

I dunno. I haven't opened it up totally yet, due to fear of a blowout. (right rear sidewall has a small chunk of rubber hanging off  from stupidity of previous owner)

The highest I've dared to go is 105. and only for a split second.

However, I can tell you what works for me.

I drive my old car, a 91 prelude 2.0 4 banger that I sold to my housemate for a day, and then get back in my car.

:D

What a difference. :D

So if you have a hyundai or geo metro at hand... spend a day in it, then get back in your car.

It took me about 6 months to fully get used to the power :D After that I would always complain that the car is to SLOW!!:D
My friend let me drive his Acura RSX Type-S this weekend, and I was thinking it would be fairly quick car with some zip in it. Well, I had that puppy floored and redlined first chance I got and it felt like I wasn't even moving. My buddy in the passenger seat was like, isnt this thing fast! I said "uh.......Ill let you drive my car somtime." Once I got back in my car, it was like the first time all over again.
i generally go home and drive my dad's RT and then i come back to annapolis, jump in my TT and tear out of the parking lot at the airport - that normally cures the feeling that my car is slow.

1 weekend. I bought the car and took it for a 500 mile trip the first day. I got it up to 140. I sure didnt seem like 140. My old car only went 72 (geo metro). I liked how the rear end moved with me when changing lanes.
You do get use to the power. I drive my CJ5 around for a couple of week (60 mph is approaching death) and then the car feels real fast(and safe) for awhile.
I always drove performance cars, so I wasn't that impressed when I drove it around. Not much quicker then my LT1 T/A, I thought kind of disappointed. Then I learned to launch and was pleased with low end take-offs, but top end was still boring. Started modding it a month after I got it, and thats when I was impressed. Now, I need slightly bigger turbos!!

Amazing how driving a slow car like that will make you appreciate your own speed that much more...
You wanna make your car feel fast again? Go drive a Lancer! :p

Yeah, ukyo and I have been taking turns driving the GSX to work lately. (We're trying to keep the miles off the VR-4.) He was giving the Eclipse way too much credit, thinking it was fast and all, so we took out the VR-4. After just a few seconds, he was like, "Damn, this car is fast!"

You know, for me, like every trip in the VR-4 takes my breath away. I never drive it, so I don't get used to it. My daily car is an Accord.

AMEN! "Sir, could you please NOT redline this car in every gear... it is brand new..."

I'm sorry, but the Lancer has about as much power as my Geo Storm. Matter of fact, a Storm vs. Lancer would be a great race, but it may get old after the first 6 minutes of trying to make it down the 1/4.

Well, after driving the VR-4 to work today I'm starting to think it's not so fast again. Weird how that works...

Don't worry. Soon the VR-4 will be your daily driver so I can drive the Accord. ;)

I found two first gen VR-4s for sale in the ATL area. We could sell the GSX, get both of them, and still come out on top. Whaddya say, SMO Cat? ;)
I barely knew how to drive stick shift when i bought my car. Onli experience i had before that was once in parkin lot with my uncle's corolla gts. And then i took the car all by myself to a AAA 20 minutes away to get a test. All this while learning to drive stick .. must admit i did die out quite a few times @ first, but i quickly got used to the clutch.

The power of this car is alot more than your average car but it is not as "overwhelming" as u might think.

I came from a 4-banger 80's Honda and i got used to the speed and learned stick shift in like 2 or 3 days. At the end of the first week i was alreadi takin my car to the street racing and spanking most cars that came up to challenge me, not just honda but also Z28 and Mustang GT's.

;)
Here's how you can really tell if you're getting used to the power: if you notice yourself actually getting bored waiting for the tach needle to race towards redline, then you're used to the power :) I used to do that in my SL. At first I was like "This is the fastest car ever!!!" (not really) But after about 2-3 months I was so tired of it and it seemed SOOO SLOOOOOOWWW. It's like when I pulled out I could go take a nap while the tach needle was creeping upwards, this was at WOT too!! I'm not really used to the power in the WRX yet. If you are "afraid" to floor it, you're not used to the power yet either ;) I don't floor my WRX that much because, to me, it seems like as soon as I floor it I'm breaking the speed limit and hitting redline. In my SL I could hold it at WOT for what seemed like MINUTES and start to doze off. Damned automatic SL. Nitrous helped a little bit, but it didn't remedy the problem completely.. obviously.
Mine never felt fast. :( I was to used to my buddy's bpu+ supra.

Someday soon though, he will be my bitch and I will redefine power for him. :D
Come drive my SOHC automatic for a month, let me have your TT or VR4, then swap back. You'll REALLY appreciate your car.

Of course, I thought my base was the fasted car on the planet when I first test drove it. Three months later I drove a TT. How wrong I was... how wrong...
What Power?:)
I think it was a slow process over about six months. I dont realize how much it has unless someone points it out for me. I'm just used to being able to take off like a bat outta hell.
My Base was fast and pulled like a madman in 3rd. There is nothing like 1st and 2nd in the VR4. Very few cars feel like that because of the lack of wheel spin. I love my VR4, when it's runnin'. ;)
one set of lights and the look on the sales guy's face when I slipped it @ 4500rpms

That was the power

The speed I still loose a little nerve around 160
im used to my stock power after only 2 months or so.
im gonna have to get that filter, exhaust, mbc pretty soon ;)
