Tranny problem PLEASE HELP!

My friend just bought a 1991 3000 GT VR4. He bought it for $6,500, but the car has a shift problem. It makes a weird bang noise when shifting aggressivly, but it is not grinding the gears. When you shift normal it doesn't make the noise it shifts just fine. It doesn't make this noise in any other gears it just does it when shifting from first to second. I thought he might need a master cylender. Has anyone else had this problem with there tranny? Do you guys think he needs a new tranny? Any Suggestions PLEASE.

synchros, id bet on it
you'd bet on syncrhos huh? I don't think so. I've replaced the syncrhos in both my stealth's and those were never symptoms of synchronizer ring problems. It sounds like maybe motor mounts or the mounts on top of the tranny that hold the tranny up are shaking and the rubber stops are bad or something. inspect all those and see what you find... let us know-
but it only happens between 1st and 2nd....what could be bad that would only be bad between those 2 gears...certainly not motor mounts...does my logic seem reasonable?
So the problem doesn't have anything to do with the tranny. I will look at the motor mounts maybe that could be it.
Tell him to try it again, except when you shift to pull the shifter to the left while pulling back. Just a thought, might help.
I never said it didn't have anything to do with the tranny. It quite possibly could. I didn't even see about only beetween 1st and 2nd. Obviously somethings getting in the way or grinding somehow, even if it's not the typical grinding noise. I would refill them w/ redline for the time being and see if that helps after about 500 miles. And yes SOHC, your logic is reasonable. :)
