Stick a big 4 inch bolt in each of the special tool holes. Stick the end of a big open end wrench over one bolt and the other end against the front axle shaft from underneath. When you turn the crank pulley bolt it will push the other bolt against the wrench and volia. I used two big allen wrenches instead of bolts but bolts would have worked better.

Try to remove the starter and block the flexplate/flywheel with a prybar. Of course I personally would use an impact wrench,but I guess you would call that a special tool.

I tried an impact. Mine didnt have enough balls to break the bolt free.

Put a breaker bar into the end bolt hole, brace it against frame, and turn motor over. It will break loose.

Unfortunately I didnt have a breaker bar long enough. I will at 120k.

I always use my impact on it. Comes right off.
