Hey all, I am the proud second owner of a 91 ES. Sadly the syncros on 1 & R are in pretty bad shape, that combined with 4 loving to pop out on the highway, I think its time for a rebuild or swap.

So to the question. Does anyone know of a good shop in Colorado they trust to get this 5sp back in prestine shape? I have heard of the golden oldies back east, but I would like to not ship the trans. I would like to keep the og trans, not perform any kind of swap (only the first couple runs used mechanical spedo right?)

-Thank you all for your help in advance!

I hope this thread won't turn into another; they are unobtainium 3 post threads...

I'm in the same boat as you minus the 4th gear issue.

I am managing after I drained the transmission fluid and put in syncromesh. After driving it a few days, 1st rarely grinds anymore - sometimes I have issues with reverse going in/popping out but I just shift through the gears and it goes into reverse.

Dreading finding someone locally to rebuild mine as well.

+1 for recommending R'venge Performance. They have an excellent reputation for the quality of their work, knowledge, and customer service. They are currently the go to place for 3S tranny work. Jack's Transmissions used to be one of the go to place 15 years or so ago. I can't speak to their current reputation or quality. Since they are local to you maybe try to find recent online reviews from customers.

Hoss,
Can you elaborate at all? McCoy above you seems to say they have at least rebuild a handful of them. -Could you perhaps recommend an alternative?
a long time ago i talked with one of the offs at jacks' about getting my parts machined for converting my trans to a 25 spline output shaft so i sent them the parts and after 6 months of wasted time and being led to believe the work was being done they tell me that they don't do it anymore. and then it took the another 3 months to get my parts that they had misplaced returned to me. there have also been many others that have said they do shott;y work if you do a search

you mentioned you wanted a pristine rebuild go with rvenge

My recommendation was based on the desire to find someone local... The only other option is to ship it to someone. (which was stated as undesirable)

If you are set on finding something local, familiarize yourself with the local DSM community and get recommendations.

If you're down with shipping it, the only recommendations from this board that come to mind is Chris at Rvenge, or myself. Chris is probably a better choice at this point, as I've got work stacked up for months in the shop at this point... About the only thing I will take in right now is random turbo builds that I can wiggle into the schedule.

As for your swap question: That trans is 91-92 only... 93-up changed some of the internals in the trans, and went to a 27 spline axle. You can swap in a 93-up if you also include the axles, and swap your mechanical speedo drive into it.
