Hi Guys,

Has anyone with a circa '93 JDM GTO replaced their O2 sensor? ...and if so, where did you get the replacement? and how much etc?

Ive been looking at the ones on 3SX, but there just seems to be too many options given that the US delivered ones have between 2 and 4 O2 sensors, whereas apparently the JDM ones only had 1.

So I'm hoping someone who's done it before can point me in the right direction.

Cheers,

I have a gto, and got 2 new ones a few months back(had 2 gtos) got it from rock auto. I'll look the part # up shortly. It's got the 4 prong flat connector and rubber grommet for the floor. I should have one still in the box
Awesome, that'd be great. Thanks mate.

Was it difficult (in terms of access) to replace?...and there is only 1 right?

Great. Ordered one of the Bosch's from RockAuto. $45 plus $28 to post. Not bad considered its still FedEx shipping not USPS.

So where exactly is the sensor located?

The only service manual I've got is for the US delivered models with 2 and 4 sensors. Given their positioning on the side of each engine bank, I presume that the GTO sensor must be placed further downstream once the two banks merge...otherwise it'd be only measuring one bank, right?

Thanks again,

Not sure about USDM model but my GTO JDM has a hole in the floor underneath where the cd player sits. You can unplug the o2 sensor right there, quite easy actually
So you get to it through the centre console then rather than from under the car?

Or do you just mean that once you take it off under the car, its easier to access the plug to unplug it from inside the car?

Okay, I'm having a bit of trouble finding this hole in the floor.

I've got the head unit out and I'm looking at the ECU, but there's no hole in the floor as far as I can see. I've even pulled out the centre console compartment to see if it's near the SRS diagnostics unit, but no go.

How close should it be to the gear shift cables that run under the ECU?

Okay, I may have a bigger problem than I thought.

First, I think i've found the cable you guys were talking about, but it has been cut:

Second, thats not the cable that I was working on underneath the car.

Is this not the O2 Sensor? Im kind of hoping not seeing as it looks nothing like the one I bought from RockAuto.com

Okay, corrected my brainfreeze and located the actual O2 sensor, and have replaced the old one with my new one, and have fed the new sensor wire up through the floor into that spot where the cut wire is in the above pic.

Good news is that the cut wire was on the Sensor side, so all it really was, was the plug had been cut off.

The bad news is that I can't locate any loose wire that im supposed to plug the new sensor's plug into.

I presume there is supposed to be a female plug connecting directly into the ECU?

Okay, I've had a bit of a poke around but I cant see any loose connector that the Sensor may go into. There also doesn't appear to be any free connectors on the ECU that would enable me to plug anything in either (although I haven't been able to get close enough to be 100%).

When I bought this car, it came with an Apexi SAFC-II (which I've never used), I don't suppose its installation would alter anything to with the the connection of the O2 Sensor would it? I though it just interfaced with the MAF sensors.

only reason to disconnect the o2 is if your runing a stand alone that does not require o2. SAFC-II would not effect the 02 sensor as it is a piggyback and the car still runs the stock computer. Does the car run fine? why were you looking to replace it in the first place?
Thats what I figured.

My reason for replacing it (aside from the persistent CEL) is that the car seems to be accelerating "unevenly". It used to feel a bit like a rubber band had been released when it was accelerating from first up to say high 2nd or 3rd...nice and even... but now it feels a like its not applying power evenly.

I have just replaced the clutch, output shaft and transfer case, and my very first thought was "shit, the clutch is slipping again" but it feels different to clutch slippage...mostly because theres no inconsistent revving that I can detect. It just feels like its losing power, for a few microseconds at a time, during the acceleration process. Plus Ive done about 800kms (of fairly careful driving) on the new clutch now, so it shouldn't be any "bedding in" issues.
