You only have to repalce the seal.
If you get a engine rebuild kit you will get the front and rear crank seals, no need to buy them separately. I have a extra set of front and rear seals because I had to replace the front and rear cases when I did the 4-bolt main conversion and the cases came with seals. I am keeping them
W/O seal case
With Seal case installed (I had to trim the cover because of 4-bolt main conversion)
You do not need to remove the oil pan to replace either.
I drill a small hole in the seal the screw a screw into it. I can then use my slide hammer to tap(pull) the seal out...clean case/crank, oil up the seal and tap it in place. Make sure that it is square when doing so.
the engine is completely disassembled I am not worried about removing the pan I was just wondering becuase I was ordering some gaskets I will need and that was one of them... going to get a qoute now...
