Anyone ever use an optical inspection tool to look inside the cylinders (to inspect valves, cylinder wall condition, carbon buildup etc.) without having to take the engine apart?

With all the low cost video gadgets available these days, I would think that this type of device should be available/inexpensive.

(I found some optical inspection probes with fiber optics but none that could be manipulated to look "up" and see the valves after being inserted through the spark-plug hole.)

I think these are a great idea and I have seen some for around $300. Many times I wish I had one.

Any links would be appreciated... maybe I'll buy one and rent it out to the group. i won't get rich but we'll all know what is going on inside our engines.

The common term for those is "borescope". Most have a mirror that attaches on the end to allow you to look up at the head.

Here is a link on Matco. Its overpriced, but it gives you an idea of what is in a good set.

Borescope

Its the last one.
