Need rebuilt transmission 5-spd FWD - Where to buy?!?!?

OK guys, my 92 Stealth RT is currently at the shop with the tranny pulled out and on a bench. That infamous pin broke and flew into the diff and blew through the case. My trans guy is still getting prices on new parts to rebuild it, but the prices are not looking good (approaching the $2K mark). I am hoping that you guys can pass on what you know, in terms of which companies sell rebuilt trannies and possibly for how much (or if you can leave a phone # or web site I will find out through them). Also if anyone's bought a rebuilt tranny I'd love to hear how much it was and from whom. I'm finding USED (junkyard) trannies and they're asking over a grand for them!!!

Also, I thought the non-turbo 3/S trannies were exactly the same as DSM trannies, with the exception of the bell housing. Isn't that right? Could I, then, buy a DSM trans and try to find a 3/S bellhousing and go that route? It seems that DSM trannies are everywhere. All you tranny experts please help!

AutoZone. $899. One Year Warranty. 1 week delivery.
AUTO ZONE?!??!

OK, that is SO not the answer I was expecting! But if that's true, then you just became my new hero for letting me know!!! I'll call them tomorrow (closed now).

Autozone = no go

I called Auto Zone, they said $2199 for a rebuilt tranny for my Stealth. So which A.Z. did you call Wicked?!? Talk about a price difference! Anyone else have any ideas for where to get a rebuilt tranny for a reasonable price (around a grand?)? I appreciate all help given!

I had mine rebuilt....

.. at a place here in town for $1300.00. Complete rebuild with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty, too. Shifts as smooth as butter.
This place is huge and had a warehouse FULL of transmissions and parts.... really clean, too.

Call them:
Man-Trans of Florida
(850) 222-6993

Not sure how economical it would be for you with shipping and all, but the actual rebuild price is good for what you get IMO.
I've just come through the same experience. My rebuild totaled $2050 at a local Benchmark Transmission, $800 of which was labor. New gear set, 1/2, 3/4 forks, pin, carrier , bearings and rings overhaul. Boy that hurt!!!

The only upside was I needed a new clutch which they installed free along with my Fidanza flywheel..

I looked briefly into buying a ready rebuilt but by the time I added labor I was back at $2K anyway.

Wow what a coincidence - I e-mailed Man Trans last night... (found them on eBay) - they called me this morning and quoted me $1100 + $500 core + $100 shipping for a remanufactured tranny. Since my core is "bad" (case has a hole blown through it) they aren't giving me full $500 credit for the core, only $250... so my cost would be $1350, + $100 shipping. $1450 is a little steep for me, even though it is the BEST price I can find on a remanufactured one. Hell I've seen used ones for that much. I'm gonna get mine rebuilt locally instead, with new parts from Man Trans... the new parts are gonna total $900 and my tranny guy is charging me $500 to do all the labor... so I'll save a few hundred versus buying the reman. one. Wish me luck folks!!!!!

Whoever you talked to at Auto Zone may have been mistaken. I worked there last year, and they sold FWD Stealth/3000gt trannies for $899 + $3xx core, no shipping charge. I'll check again tomorrow to see if the price has changed.
