Long time lurker - first introduction! [Build thread]

Hey all,

I don't post much, but have been trying to get more active on the forums to offer advice and my two cents on things. I never got to fully introduce myself. I'm sure some of y'all have seen me post here and there.

Ever since I was a little kid, I've always played Gran Turismo 2 on the PS1 and I fell in love with the 3000GT. As I grew up, it's all I ever talked about as far as a "dream car." Every one of my car friends knew me as the "guy who wants a 3000GT VR-4."

Long story short, in the summer of 2020.. I'm now a proud owner of my dream car! And to put the cherry on top.. It's a 1994 Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo MR!

As far as I know, beside the import dealership I purchased it at.. I am the first owner of this car in the U.S! I bought it all "stock" at around 115,000Km on it (~71,457 Mi).. I haven't looked at it recently since it's in the garage for winter storage but I believe it's around 72,000 miles now. It's come a long way for mods since I had it, but check the signature if you are curious.

Just this past summer in 2021, I took home first place for 2nd Generation 3000GT's at the All Mitsubishi Cookout hosted here in Minnesota. It was my first trophy, and I didn't think I would win since there were way cooler 3/S there. Big thank you to Curtis for hosting it, and everyone who participated and voted. I cried on the inside, since it was my first trophy ever.

I hope you enjoyed my story, and I have a lot more to tell!

Cheers,

VR Thor
Jonathan

Had to give the GTO some Vitamin D today. Cooped up in the garage for too long.

MN Mitsubishi Cookout is coming up next week.

Originally my “dream wheels” were Enkei RS05RRs, but after speaking to an Enkei rep, the specs to fit them were abysmal. So, I had to find another set of “dream wheels.”

I’m kind of an oldschool soul in a young dudes body. With that said, I love, and I’m attempting, a period-correct aesthetic. When I think of “Regamasters” it reminds me of old school 90s iconic stuff. They’re lightweight race orientated wheels and I much prefer a function over form ordeal.

Thats kind of the gist behind why I picked them!

Also “real wheels” wow factor, haha. Real deal stuff!

Extremely hot and sunny today, so I postponed the car wash with an engine bay wash and detail.

The bad news.. My younger brother has decided to throw away all of my shampoo, sponges, and polishing pads.

A cloudy day is a great day for a wash! Bit of a breeze so hopefully there’s not too much dust and containments. Wish I had a dedicate shop space or a bigger garage haha.

Cleaned up 4 months of dust nicely. Rinse, wash, and a quick wax.

One of the last few meets of the year for me with my friends before we put our cars into storage for winter here in Minnesota. We are celebrating the brand new opening of a detailing shop (business existed, just upgraded in shop space) owned by another close friend of ours.

The GTR is some random guy who parked next to us, and it just so happened that the photographer captured this image.

Funny story:

Later that day, my garage opener and key fob died. I was completely confused since they were working perfectly ALL DAY and the past year. Good news, it happened to just be the batteries. Those are replaced on both devices, and they are working way more efficiently. Almost as if they have way longer range/stronger connection, but maybe that is just a placebo of me replacing batteries lol.

Long hiatus as it’s been winter here in Minnesota. Temperatures have been rising and spring may be coming around the corner.

Small update: Depinning ECUs. Header is going with my old man tomorrow to get unsoldered from the board. New wiring coming in to get repinned on the male side.

ECU jumper harness is coming along the way this spring since I’m determined to get my gauges wired in without hacking my OEM harness.

I have two sets in the process, one will remain as an OEM extension harness, the other will be fully prepped and left “open-pinned” for when I purchase a Haltech setup.

Cheers.

Old man putting in some work! Off the board and cleaned up.

Progress is moving faster than anticipated.. The only thing holding back is wiring and additional terminals shipping.

Shipment 1/3.. ✅

Terminals have arrived.

Shipment 2/3 en route: 200’ of TXL wiring, and about 30’ of various heat shrink.

Shipment 3/3 en route from homeland Japan. Based on reviews, ordered a nice set of JDM wire crimping and die set.

This will be a fun time to burn some winter time and prep for spring!

All three shipments have arrived! ✅✅✅

The craftsmanship on this tool is amazing. The box is like a pelican case, the interior lined with carbon fiber, and the crimper itself has an amazing feel.

The final piece needed to begin the wiring work. Japanese tools hit different. I’m stoked!

Crimping with the good tools makes life a lot easier! Did a few test crimps and did my research for best “crimp” practices and I’m off my way!

Slightly unrelated to 3/S/GTOs, but completely related to Mitsubishi, turbos, and wiring.

Somehow picked up a client along the way of all this and completed a JDM '90 Galant VR-4 to EVO VIII PnP conversion harness.

Cheers!
