I just did the computer mod where you replace your old failing caps in your car, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! I can't beleive how much better my car runs, it start easier, it idles smotther, and it accelerates without any more hesitation. Defiately worth the $5 bucks in parts.

After that i replaced my thermostat. I also replaced my fuel filter, but now it seem my car is continuously running rich. Has anyone expierenced this problem?

My car is running fine, so this is just out of curiosity. Are there certain years that are more susceptible to failing capacitors? I'm guessing the early models.

94 is in the failure range. Lucky you! Look for "Capacitors for ECU Repair $5" in Parts For Sale. The links in John Monnin's post will tell you about everything you need to know.
EXRPilot,
I ordered the caps for my 94 VR4 with hopes to fix a year old hot start/idle problem. An IAC motor fixed that and I haven't gotten around to checking my ECU yet. I'm in Memphis too, maybe we should get together and have a de-solder party. LOL
BTW looks like you have a clone of my car.
A little less than 50% success rate

I'm always glad to hear when replacing the Capacitors helps someone.

I guess this helps for a little less than 50% of the people that try it. It often doesn't help because they have not yet gone bad or the ECU has been bad for so long that other damage has occured.

I was one of the people it didn't help I was going to repalce the CAPs but an electrical Engineer at work said mine were still good. I kept searching and found the real problem for my car was the timing was off about 50 degrees:eek:

I am going to practice soldering some old junk electronics at home then I will do my ECU as preventative maintenance and post the whole proceedure on my webpage.

Unfortuately now that the car is running good my wife won't let me have it long enough to repalace teh CAPS on the ECU.
Hey Jeg, what's that computer mod is all about?
can you explain bit more? Thank you.

Hey BucknVR4,
If you need any help with anything minor, like changing your sparkplugs. Shoot my an email. [email protected] I'm glad to help out any 3SI member. Any mods yet?

Dustin

Actually I live in Horn Lake, MS for now. I'll be moving to Nashville next month.
chung: Ask JOhn Monnin, he has the most info on the mod, it more of a repair than a mod though.... I should have said repair instead of mod...
Its not a Mod its a repair.

Its not a Mod its a repair. The Capacitors on Misubishi's ECU's have a nasty tendancy to start leaking when thye are over 7 years old. This doesn't happen to every car but when it does the car starts running really weird. If you replace the Capacitors before they leak too much its a cheap repair. If you wait too long the capacitors will either leak and corrode the circuit board or they will allow voltage spikes that will damage the rest of the ECU.

Check the Thread in my signature for details on how to diagnose and repair.
