How hard would it be...

...to swap a different tranny into a 3S TT. Say...an MKIV tranny for instance. What modifications would need to be done?

difficultto do, engine is facing the wrong way to convert to a rear drive tranny. You would have to turn the engine 90 degrees
I guess the MKIV was a bad example. What if you wanted to switch to another AWD tranny, but better than the GETRAG, and from a different car?
Hmm, I thought Gatecrasher would've replied to this kind of "what if" post :)
Skyline maybe?
Same brand tranny. But the car ways a bit less.

you're in the same boat with the skyline trans as you are with the supra trans. they are both RWD based trannys. You could put on an Eclipse AWD trans and a non-turbo flywheel and clutch, but now why would you want to go and do that? :)
The casing for the Eclipse AWD trans won't work. We don't have removable bell housings like, for instance a Borg T56 does, so you can't just swap. I didn't reply the first time because we've beaten this tranny thing to death and I hoped someone might be inspired to check the archives ;)
If the people in "Junkyard Wars" can build a 12sec 1/8th mile car in 10hrs someone can find a tranny that works.

don't MKIV's use Getrags too?
Whats wrong with the current trannies in the VR4s and TT's?

For the price of the converstion, couldn't you make a bulet proof tranny? I remember some shop just came out with Brass Synchros for the TTs...that + a strong clutch, you could probubly handle any power level.
I think someone mentioned a Porsche AWD system since those cars all screwey like ours also. I, however, believe the answer lies in making custom part replacements for the weak links. These trannies hold up to 10 second 1/4s without shredding apart while propelling almost 4000 lbs to to trap at 120+mph! We damage synchros, and sometimes output shafts (mostly 18spline ones). Ocassionally someone destroys the caged bearings which trashes the whole unit (which I attribute to lack of maintenance). All in all, this is a pretty stout tranny--you just have to work it properly. I remember a friend who kept rebuilding his 4-speed Muncie rock crusher in his Chevelle SS with a 396 engine with 396 horse. It put down about 500 lb-ft and he would blow up bell-housings and crack cases etc. This kind of power is childs play compared to what we can put down, and the trannies are holding it pretty well considering. Mine was replaced twice, both times due to leaks only.

Hehe, duely noted ;)
I'm rummaging through the archives as we speak :)
