Getrag Rebuild Manual - 5 and 6 speed models

After years of searching and many weeks of translation work, I am now proud to provide the first complete Getrag W5MG1/W6MG1 rebuild manual for our cars.

This book was translated from the original MMC Japanese language service manual by myself, with assistance from several 3SI members.

I've provided both the unedited Japanese book and the translated US book. In addition to the service specifications to the transaxle I've included the DaimlerChrysler transfer case recall information.

Original Japanese manual

Translated US manual

PLEASE understand that I have taken every effort to ensure an accurate translation, but I cannot guarantee the perfect accuracy of this book! It is presented as a guide only and you should NOT attempt this work unless you have a thorough understanding of what you're doing!

Also, please let me know if you find any errors. I can very easily update the book if needed. I'd like to hear any and all feedback you may have to offer.

we need to sticky this. I want to make a 3sfaq sometime in the near future.
First, thank you for this invaluable manual. I have saved the manual and I have Acrobat 7.0. I can view all the pages okay, but there are 27 pages of the 65 in the Manual Transmission chapter that will not print. When I try to print them, either from the web page or from opening the file on my hard drive, the preview shows the right page, the printer command is normal, the printer cycles normally just like it is going to print the page but then just spits the page out as if the page was blank. Any ideas on how I can get them printed? Thanks.
Which pages are giving you the problem?
The page numbers from the document (not the 22-xx numbers) are:
19,31,34,37-39,41-45,47,52-56,58,60-63,65,66,70,74 and 75. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I just printed pages 19 (i.e., 22-4) and 54 (22-39); both printed out fine with Adobe Reader 6.0. I have Acrobat 7.0 (the full version, not the reader) at work and could try that on Monday. Maybe try redownloading the file, or get 6.0 if you can.
Thanks. I've got a couple of friends that are trying to print these pages for me, too. I think I may just get 6.0 as it seems that doesn't have any problems. I just want a hard copy of the whole thing as I undertake my first Getrag rebuild. I'm more of an engine guy, but I have a good friend who is a Mitsu Certified Master Technician, so I will at least have a great helper. (Actually, HE'S the one who will have a helper). Thanks for helping.
Thanks to everyone who helped me. I now have all the pages printed. I can now start on the transmission. Thanks.
is this manual for a VR4? will it work for an SL
Only awd
Pages 34, 43, 45, 46, 47, 54, 59 cause my Adobe to crash. I can access the other pages by going to them directly. I didn't go past page 72.

edit: I just updated my Adobe from 5.1 to 7.0. No more problems.
is the rest of this manual available for download somewhere? is this the actual technical manual from DSM?

This is a good manual why do you want another kind? This is pretty complete just wondering. ohh anyways Don't call our cars DSM's I'm taking it your new here but 3000GT's and Stealths were not made in the USA. Therefore they are not Diamond Star Motors cars. They are Mitsubishi ;) if you want to get down and dirty.
This is the complete rebuild manual for the trannys. It was translated from Japanese as it was not available in the US.
sorry...i knew that :) i wasn't sure if the complete manual for all technical/mechanical work was available online, not just the Tranny, thats what i was asking. I also wasn't sure if the manual was strictly Mitsu, or DSM, because Dodge was part of the whole deal.
I work at a reprographics company so I can turn this into a nice hard copy for free :)
you should do this then and then let us all have a copy to put in our records. i know i keep every book i own on cars and also CD's for any online data i obtain
Great work on this and it will help me when i get the money to do the rebuild at my school... damn college costs

i'm probably beating a dead horse but...
thanks for the translation, this is awesome!
Wanted to say thanks again as well, tore apart my tranny last night and this certainly helped!
Thanks for the info. anyone know off hand where to get the disasembly tools MB991578 (REAR COVER DISSASIMBLY TOOL) for W5MG1 AND MB991589 WORKING BASE. Also best sealant to use and where to find?

any help is apreciated!
Try Mistu parts for the tools. If they can not get them, then try a tool truck like Snap-On or MAC for instance. I use and have had great luck with the Mitsu sealant. I have always used a gray sealant either Mitsu or a brand from the parts store. The key is to use just a thin film. Excessive sealant useage can led to premature failure of bearings, rings, and even cause leaks. (As odd as that sounds.)

Bumping this one to the top.

Anybody know where to get parts? I've been calling a lot of people with the same results. Kormex doesn't have too much parts anymore, CRS is not building replacement parts anymore, and even Getrag USA doesn't have anything for the 5 or 6 speed anymore.

I am rebuilding a '92 5 speed and I need:
* a set of the 3 synchro rings for 2nd (inner ring had broken in 2)
* rearmost aluminum cover
* one ball and one spring for 1/2 hub and sleeve

If anybody can throw me a hint of who to contact, please let me know.

Andre
