A short while back someone mentioned they thought the RPM 7000 concept car might turn out to be the successor to our cars. For those that don't remember, that one was the SUV with the turbo 4 (4g63 with all wheel drive). It basically seemed like a "jacked up" DSM with a new body. Well, in keeping with the tradition of moving towards SUVs, Mits had this thing at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. It seems to me what the RPM 7000 was to the DSMs – a SUVified version of an AWD sports car is what this is to our VR4s. It wouldn't be particularly noteworthy to me, except for a small blurb I saw in Dec's Road and Track:
450bhp biturbo 3.5-liter V-6

Sounds an awful lot like the 6g74 a few of us would like to build some day:) .

Anyway, here are a couple of pics and a few articles I've come up on while searching for more info on the Mitsubishi Pajero
Evolution:

(seems like a German translation of Mits' press release)

Comments anyone?

Knowing how concept cars turn out in the end, I wouldn't be suprised if it ended up with about 200HP in the final version. I was excited that Mistu was bringing the lancer over to US as well until I found out that it's the non-turbo model....

Don't count the Evo out yet. The only difference between the Lancer and the Mirage is the name, basically. The Mirage was always known as the Lancer abroad, so they just joined all of that together. The Evo (according to my dealer), will be here around October 2002. It should be coming in Evo VII guise, but it may have a little bit less power (down from the quoted 280hp in England and Japan). I am not sure how much less, it may be 260 or 220 or something. Subaru is coming out with a higher trim level of the WRX here, with 280 hp, so that may tip the scales towards keeping the EVO VII with more power coming here. If by next October there is still no news, then I am not sure if it will come.

wow... thats crap...

seriously..

when i first saw that concept awhile ago.. i thought mitsubishi was smokin some bad shit.. and would snap out of it...

but now they are considering going through with it?

I cant see it doing good at all in the states, but maybe if it stays overseas, it might have a small chance...

I don't think it's the successor. Pajeros been around for a long time -guess they never made it to the US

Back in 1992 or '93 (I think...) Two people in my neighborhood owned Pajeros, but that was in the Philippines tho. It was a beautiful SUV.Unfortunately, I didn't check its details since I didn't care about cars back then. I was too busy playing Nintendo :D

Chevy had a terrible time selling the Nova in Mexico--till they realized Nova in Spanish means "No Go"

I doubt that monstrosity is going to be the next gen 3KGT... it's just nothing at all like our cars. It might replace the Montero... maybe... but not the 3000GT.

We likely won't get a new batch of 3000GTs until this whole SUV craze dies down. There just isn't the market for a hot "sports" car anymore. :(

SUVs aren't impressive - they block my vision. Rono, I live just a couple miles up 441 and 2 miles west at the end of Palmetto Park Road ... we should "do lunch" (go kill some Vettes and Porsches) sometime.

Mitsusl:

I didn't really mean that this is something like the new 3000GT. It's more of a comment on the person who brought up the RPM 7000 - this is definately more similar. As I said before, it's more of a "SUVified" version of an existing car. We can't know for sure, because so little info is given, but we can make some assumptions: because this engine is in the same family as ours, it's likely that it uses the same or similar components as ours. If you look at the pics, the hood is so short, there is no way the engine could be anything but a transverse arrangement. And being an SUV, it had better be awd or 4wd. I wonder if it is an auto or stick?

blind26:

My interest in this thing lies in the potential for parts for our cars. Bigger turbos maybe? Manifolds for turbos other than the TD04? A sturdier transmission? Of course it's just a concept car. It's possible that nothing will come of it. BUT...

Specialist, Aerosly:

The Pajero is the Japanese version for our Monteros (both the big one and the Sport). The special thing about this is they use the Pajero in a race called the Paris-Dakar Rally. So like the EVO, hopefully Mitsu will be motivated to build the thing for racing purposes. Based on the blurb I read, we now know there is at least one functional TT 3.5 V6 floating around. It WORKS.

Anyway what I'm really hoping will come out of this is some pics of the engine. Anyone know anything about the show car circuit? What's left? Anyone want to jump over the rope, pop the hood and take some pics? :) As we’ve seen (see Han’s 2.5 engine post), there’s some commonality among the 6g7_ family. If this Pajero ever makes it into production, we now could have available from Mits all the parts needed for a 3.5 liter twin turbo 3000GT.

Bob:

I saw and admired your car in Mike’s garage when you had it there. Right now I’m looking into swapping out the tranny on my NA. I’m not even going to talk about the VR4-it's a ways from being driven any time soon. I’ve been reduced to driving a Honda. If I ever get it together, I’d love to meet up with you.
