I'm looking to buy a 3000GT with a manual transmission, and two I am considering are:

1) 1997, white, 140K miles by a dealer, according to carfax he provided,in 2009 at 92K miles, the timing belt replaced, water pump replaced, valve cover gaskets replaced, and regular servicing. Price is $7,000. Looks in mint condition. He said all the fees included in his price.

2) 1994 black, 65k miles, from an individual, he's a mechanic. Waiting on vin to get carfax report, price is $6,500.

The 1994 appears to be the better option because of the lower mileage but I prefer the spoiler on the 1997 and I prefer white, so if I bought the 1994 I'd have to spend about $2K on painting it white and replacing the spoiler, so technically it would cost me about $1,500 more.

Would it be better to pay an $1,500 an additional for the 1994 (after painting/spoiler change) with 75K less miles even though the 1997 is 3 years newer? Is there anything like engine, transmission, etc. that makes one year better than the other, or they the exact same car mechanically?

Also, what suggestions do have for checking out the 3000GT if no shop close by to take it to, and questions to ask the owner?

Search for the buyers guide on this forum and check everything you can on the list. Then consider OBD1 on the 1994 bs OBD2 on the 1997 as a factor. Plan to do the 60k (timing belt and water pump) right away on the 1997 because it is past due unless there are records showing it was done less than 5 years ago. Same consideration for the 1994 depending on what records come up.
