1993 Car & Driver Six Car Comparo Article w/ VR-4

I was going over some of my older car magazines, and I stumbled across a few relating to the 3S. I figured most of everyone here would be interested in seeing them, so I'm going to post them. None of the three I found are in the "Library" section of Stealth316.com. The first one is a six-car comparo in Car & Driver September of 1993 between the Corvette, RX-7, Porsche 968, 300ZX Turbo, 3000GT VR-4, and Supra Turbo.

I'm really interested in opinions on this large comparo, so let's have them...the more, the merrier.

I also have some comparos in issues of Motor Trend, April of 1992 and July of 1993. I'll try and get them up soon.

kool find sucks the vr4 was 6th place. :(
cool find, Too bad they did it in 93 and not in 94. It would be intresting to see how the 20 more HP and new style would affected the tester's view of the 3/S
Well, I like my toupe.
Swiss army knife. Thats funny. Supra dominated the straightline stuff and at the track. I'll keep my 3s though. I read one a while back with just the 7, a stealth, and the lt1.

I think its a fair assessment of the cars stregnths and weaknesses. Mitsu had a lot of short comings from the factory and the main one was the 9b. Weight aside if they had just used the parts they were already using on the eclipses, the 3s would be seen in a different light today. 14b's or 13g's stock, 450 inj's stock, if if if if if if. Many ifs but I am happy with what they did put out. Slowly but surely there is an aftermarket and we can put on all that stuff ourselves.

Look how far the vette has come since that time. The next zo6 will be 7.0 litres and 500 hp. Supposedly an 11 sec car stock, and the regular c6 is low 12's @ 117 stock. I wonder how much mitsu would have changed since 99 if the vr4 was still going today. Maybe we would have a watered down vr4 comparable to a 350z (300z>350z).
i think i've read about 5 reviews on the VR-4/TT and most of the time people complain about the small cabin and low head room. i don't get it. seems fine to me. are all test drivers 6'5"?! i'm 5'8" (average height for a white male in the US is 5'9") and i have more than enough room. i wish they would stop commenting on the back seats being useless as if it were bad. ofcourse they are useless!!! i don't think the back seats are a determining factor in the purchase of this car.
"well, i was gunna buy it but i just can't due to the fact i can't fit my 4 kids and my golf clubs in the back"

EDIT: oooooook well i just read a bit more and i guess the tallest driver was 6'5". well he should just buy a minivan then. MOST people aren't close to 6'5"
realize those guys all owned Z's and the supra was new(buzz) and you end up with your rankings.

yeah it outbraked and out skidpadded the z and out dragged it...

and the stupid "looks" category... The stock Z and supra I consider very bland compared to the 3000gt. I dunno a rx7 i think looks fugly

They call it busy looking.
are all test drivers 6'5"?!
they were probably 7 foot, cuz im 6'5" and im more cozy in the stealth than any other car i've owned. more leg and head room than my svx, mx6, or imark

I'm 6'2 and iI have plenty of legroom and headroom even with my sunroof. Ive heard people who are 6'+ complaining of being "squished". WTF are they talking about!? Love my GT. (Esp the stares from just about everyone.)
I'm 6'3" and no problem. Just tilt the seat back and hair and relax. Do these guys like to sit straight up behind the wheel like a bus driver? That's how women drive.
Good read - but the VR4 wasn't impressive enough I guess.

Oh, I'm 6'3" with no head room or leg problems.
are there any reviews like that for the 2nd gens? most old vids and mag revs I have seen are only for 1st gens...

Somehow, I don't think their opinion would change !!!

I personally would still take the VR4 over 99% of the cars out there !!! :)

perhaps... but i still wouldnt mind reading what they thought of the new design and the extra hp... (yes we all know it wasnt much but for them it was a big deal)
Does a C4 vette really only run a [email protected] stock?
Great post! Make sure you email this to Jeff so he can add it to his site library (www.stealth316.com)

I am sure they are out there you just have to watch ebay for them.

Does a stock 1st gen run 14 @ 99?
Its all about the driver and experience with the car. It would be a better if they let the testers drive the car for about a month before they actually had to get a 1/4 time out of the car. I know it took me a while to get the launch and shifting an vr4.

Some 1st gens have gone 13.6 @ over a 100 completely stock. All those cars are capable of better times stock. Supra would still win the straighline stuff for 93. 94 With the appropriate AWD launch the vr4 could possible get the same ET but the supra with the right driver behind the wheel would still trap significantly higher than all the other cars.
As far as I know, these guys are professionals and run the quarter mile (as well as the 0-60, etc) several times and pick the best runs of the bunch. I don't think it's a matter of them not knowing how to launch. Now, an argument can be made that these cars are brand new and not nearly broken in yet. Also, there are some cars from the factory that are faster or slower than others...there's no real explanation.
I like the 3k out of all of those cars..... :D

You got a sweet TT on ebay, did it come with or without the sunroof? I'm surprised we didn't post that auction on 3si, I can bet your car is worth high teens :)

I have this issue as well, and I am shocked that Mitsu couldn't give a pre-production 94 to the testers that previous summer. Heck, even the Stealth didn't get any love considering they had a Vette in the test. bastards :ak47:
