The cost and complexity of adapting the VR4 drivetrain while staying NA wouldn't be worth it. Seeing as you have an SL an not a VR4 in the first place I assume cost is a limiting factor. I would just do any necessary maintenance to keep your car on the road such as the 60k service if hasn't been recently done. Even if your car isn't the fastest around, you can still appreciate it for what is. I enjoy seeing these on the road as they are getting harder to come by. If you really want AWD, save up for a well maintained VR4 and enjoy your SL in the meantime.
