1800 miles later, I own a Spyder VR4

... a very dirty 1995 Spyder VR4. Bought if from a gentleman in Texas. Never actually met the owner, he was too pissed about the sale. His dealership "friend" was selling the vehicle for him, and pretty much pressured him into accepting my offer. Lets just say I paid LESS than what he owes on it:eek:. I made the same offer a month ago, he was said "NO, I will NOT go less than my asking price."

It had 27,5XX miles when I got to the car. I was told that the 60K service had NOT been performed (another reason why I offered less than asking price), so my fiance and I was going to trailer the car back to TN with the Dodge Ram. We made the U-Haul reservation and everything. We get there and the 60K had been done by the previous owner in 2008 with all OEM parts at the stealership, yeaaaaa, to the tune of $2450.

Background: at the hotel my fiance and I both had nightmares about getting into an accident pulling this car back to TN (neither of us has pulled a trailer in a very long time).

So we decided the 60K had been done less than two years ago, we are driving the car back to TN. Of course, it would be raining in TX. I still haven't driven with the top down. My fiance actually let me drive the car, which was good and bad, all the way back. She was running a fever of 100 most of the way back, she got a summer cold or something. I decided to be nice and let her have the comfy truck, with satellite radio, great seats, radar detector, and nice suspension. I got wind noise, semi-comfy seats, stiffer suspension, craptastic radio. and 60+ years of tried bones. We did bring Walkie-Talkies with helped.

The bads about the car that were not disclosed until we got there:

Both door panels are bubbled
Needs new weatherstripping in a couple of places.
Dash vents are cracked

The goods about the car that we didn't know about:

60K service
New hydraulic roof pumps and hoses

We got back around 3:00 this morning, it WILL get a nice bath today.

So here are a couple of pictures until we get it washed up (yes I know the decals are in the wrong place). Clean carfax and autocheck, and it doesn't appear to be repainted (except for the roof in 1998 by Mitsubishi).

Sweet score! Looks like it will clean up nice. I'd be OK with the trade of 60K service for some bubbles and weatherstripping...

Congrats!
Ben
and now youve got to tell us what kind of deal you got on that beauty

Not really, considering I already have the 120K parts. And door panels are around $430 each new, I'm not buying used ones (been there tried that).

A gentleman never reveals his secrets;). Lets just say I paid a lot less than he did a year ago, and he only drove it 1000 miles and spent over $1000 in maintenance. He was NOT happy about the deal, but a divorce and pending financial troubles required the sale.
I would like to has. :(
Congrats, it's gorgeous.
Very nice find I'm so envious i want one of these so bad! Get that top down and go cruising!
Nice snag. Start looking for the stripping now, they're very difficult to come by. Hell of a nice stable you've got going there.

I know what you paid, you did good. ;)

Pretty common stuff there. Sucks about the doors, but the weatherstripping and vents are bad on just about every 3/S I've ever seen or been in.
Let the fun begin... I have a busted hydraulic hose somewhere. I opened/closed the top probably a dozen time in Texas at the dealership. Today put the top down to drive it to the car wash (hadn't driven it with the top down yet). Decided I didn't feel up to washing the car (still sick), so went a pick up something for dinner. Came home tried to put the top up, but the tonneau cover won't go down, the top opens/closes though. Sure as shit, I found a little hydraulic fluid on the floor.

April (Don's fiance)
and i jizzed in my pants.

next car: C4 Vette, 70-72 Maro, Spyder SL/VR4

That sucks (the leak)! Hopefully it's not in a tight spot. It's hydraulic btw ;)

I have had like no sleep and drove around 2500 miles since Saturday, plus I feel like shit... I know excuse are like assholes, so I'll blame firefox spell checker also. Alright I am just a dumbass o.k..
Congratulations on the Spyder. Good color choice :D

There are alot of reasons why the top might not work but hydraulic leaks are kind of rare. The most common failure is probably microswitches. We've had a couple people break the clevis joint which raises the tonneau up and a couple people replaced o-rings in the pumps. The system tends to be pretty reliable in my opinion. I've had mine for 10 years with no issues.

You should join 3000Spyders group on Yahoo where we discuss anything about the tops and alot of other junk too :)

I build and sell electronics for the Spyders, Remote Top, and Toplink diagnostics. You can find the links in my signature. Also google for Spyderregistry.

It's an OK choice, I suppose ;)

Already IN :) [I'm a mod there]

If you can manage the cost, the Toplink diagnostics is a MUST and Jim is a great guy to work with!!!!!

BTW, since you mentioned the decals, be VERY careful if you are going to try to move the SPYDER VR4, you can get replacements but only from a member on this board (that I know of). The one on the left is the same as the stock one (I believe).

She's a beauty :)

Don't be afraid to ask questions....we ALL have....

Already joined 3000Spyders group on Yahoo, that was almost the first thing I did when I got home. I am still trying to learn exactly how the group thing works, and how things are "organized".

I am almost positive it is a hydraulic line, because the guy at the dealership said he just worked on it, and there is hydraulic fluid on the ground on the passenger side. He did give me the extra hydraulic fluid he had (I guess I should have taken that as a warning). I will find out more today.

I found the TopLink website, and I will definitely be ordering one. It only make sence if you own a Spyder. The only question I have, is it easier to use with EvoScan? I am kind of computer stupid.

It's an OK choice, I suppose ;)

Black, white, or yellow were my only options, I can't stand the color red (sorry Bob, Don really likes your car though:)).

Thanks Bob. I was going to PM you with a couple of question, but I wanted to see if I could find the answers myself first. I have come to realize that most of the low mileage Spyders I have come across are owned by people that don't know crap about the car. At least, all the ones I have inquired about are like that.

This car is far from perfect, but once I am done it will be perfect. The mileage and the price was right. Plus, the engine is mechanically sound, and the roof functions. Everything else is cosmetic and can be easily (but not cheap) to fix.

It's going to be a working progress, won't drive it much this year. I need to tear apart the 94 VR4 and put it back to stock, and then sell it. And some of the stuff I take of the 94 is going on the Spyder. The chromies wheels on the Spyder are perfect, so those are coming off first and put into an air tight bag and put away.

Congrats, I think I saw this same car while browsing recently.

I've been close to biting the bullet several times on a Spyder, but I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to do it. Every time I sit in one, it looks just like the interior of my Stealth (worse actually, since the Stealth has upgrades) and I end up passing.

But then every time I think about getting another convertible... sigh. :)
SWEET!!! Congrats on the spyder..... hopefully there will still be nice ones around when I can afford one....
Nice car :O)

Are you selling the VR4?
