I just purchased a modified 92 VR4 from back east. It’s being shipped here, should arrive first week of December. I flew out to purchase it, drove it a couple of hundred miles and there’s a few issues. Can anyone recommend a good local mechanic/specialist who could look it over and recommend some solutions? And a good local place for redoing the interior?
About 5K miles ago, the engine was rebuilt (and new water/oil pump etc), new Phantom turbos, DSM side mount intercoolers, Dejon Y-pipe, full exhaust system (no cat), hotwired PTE 550 injectors, running between 7 and 13 lbs of boost (TurboXS dual stage manual controller).
He also included a Palm Pilot with software and a cable that connects to a connector under the dash which monitors the engine, not sure what it’s called or where I can read about it?
And some device that I believe controls the mapping. There’s a gauge that displays the fuel/air mixture (currently reads 14.7). Does this need to be adjusted for SLC altitude?
Some of the issues I noticed are:
Loud noise from the rear of the car (not exhaust) that starts to really get loud above 10 mph, maybe wheel bearings?
Dark brown/black smoke when the turbos spool up, idles around 1400 rpm.
Talk to jason at price matched parts
He's a great guy and knows his stuff plus he's local
Also your exhaust color sounds like its due to the car running rich
What is used in it to tune?

Does 3si count?
I think so.
yeah the smoke is probably being to rich. the palm pilot is called a datalogger. very useful. and the loud sound from the back is it a whining or scraping? All of us here do our own mechanic work. personally i dont trust any shop here in utah with my car.

Sorry for the long winded post…
Welcome to 3SI!
Interior for cheep and good- "Penny seat covers" orem utah small hispanic shop that does an amazing job
What kind of Engine Managment is on it? the palm is a logger.
Your AFR will get rich bringing it up here to this altitude so you will have to cut back a little fuel.
Smoke when you spool up can be bad new.. Did you look in the intake pipes for oil?
Let me know if you need anything for your ride. we will get you hooked up!
The high idle could be something as simple as the idle adjustment screw or the throttle cable.
What does the device thats used for mapping say on it?
The idle adjustment screw (BISS) should never be messed with though. However, the o-ring sealing that screw could be leaking. I set my BISS and then RTV'd over it.
On any Mitsu you shouldn't mess with the BISS unless somebody else has. Your idle is self-adjusting. Usually if the car idles too high, it indicates a vacuum leak. A rough or too-low idle could mean the throttle plate (which is supposed to leak a certain amount of air) is caked with carbon deposits.
